My Most Anticipated Films Guide for 2013

My Most Anticipated Films Guide for 2013

I sat down to share the ten movies that I really want to see in 2013...but then I got a little lost because there was so damn many of them. So I thought, what the hell, why dont I just list everything I wanna see? And that I did. Instead of just listing the films boringly, Ive sorted them into groups and Photoshopped the crap out of stuff. Without further ado, heres the guide to my excitement for this year:

As Ive said probably 194781397410 times during Annual Awards Nersim, Ive seen 0.07% 2012 movies. Ive pretty much missed all of the good ones...either because I cant be bothered going to the cinemas or I live in NZ so hahaha, we dont get any movies. These films are the ones that havent been released in cinemas yet. I will get to see The Perks of Being a Wallflower next week, since it will be on the plane (!). When I get back from Japan, I will be seeing Django Unchained, hopefully on the 25th. The Master comes out before then but theres a 0.06% chance that it will play at more than two cinemas in NZ. Im going to see Les Miserables on the 21st (hopefully) with a friend, who is also coming with me to see Silver Linings Playbook, which also comes out on the same day as Lincoln, Zero Dark Thirty and Anna Karenina - Ill probably only see Zero Dark Thirty in cinemas though. Holy Motors, Amour, Smashed and Rust and Bone probably wont show anywhere near me, but I eagerly await their DVD releases.

Was 2012 the year of Matthew McConaughey. I dunno...2013 seems pretty strong. I still have to see The Paperboy, which Im not all that excited for but hey, Nicole Kidman urinating on Zac Efron, thats a once in a lifetime experience! Another 2012 movie of his was Mud, Jeff Nichols follow up to the brilliant Take Shelter, which went to Cannes but will be released this year. Thats one of my most anticipated. Lately, Matty M has been fading away for his role in The Dallas Buyers Club, which Im 99.78% sure hell be amazing in. One of my most anticipated for the year is The Wolf of Wall Street, which is headlined by Leonardo DiCaprio throwing money to da peasants. Plus, it is Martin Scorsese, and men in suits.

Im pretty sure every year is going to be the "year of Jessica Chastain". She was relitavely quiet in 2012 until Zero Dark Thirty showed up...but this month shes on the trailer disc at work three times for Lawless, Madagascar 3 and Coriolanus. In 2013, Ill obviously be seeing Zero Dark Thirty, maybe Mama even though it doesnt look like my thing (but she looks badass), and if Wilde Salome finally gets a release, then Ill be seeing that. Im especially excited for The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: His & Hers, a two-film project co-starring James McAvoy and Jess acting idol Isabelle Huppert. Sounds interesting!

Because Terrence Malick is becoming a prolific guy, it would seem. To the Wonder will be out mid this year, but hes also got Knight of Cups and Untitled Terrence Malick Project (formerly known as Lawless, before, yknow...) slated for 2013. I imagine hell edit those projects for a little while longer, but Im particularly excited for the untitled one, as it has Ryan Gosling, Rooney Mara, Michael Fassbender, Natalie Portman, Cate Blanchett and Berenice Marlohe in it. Wow.

These films are all bound to literature greats in some way: August: Osage County is based on a famous play by Tracy Letts, who also wrote Killer Joe; The Counselor (starring Michael Fassbender) is the screen-writing debut of Cormac McCarthy, who has written more famous novels than I can count; Kill Your Darlings is about the Beat generation from the 40s/50s, focusing on Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac and William Burroghs; and Much Ado About Nothing is based on the Shakespeare play - and it is adapted by Joss Whedon, who decided to make it on one of his holidays. How awesome is that?

While Christopher Nolan may not be bringing out anything this year, I have plenty of other directors bringing out the new stuff this year. Neill Blomkamp, who wowed me with District 9, is bringing out his follow-up, Elysium. Jason Reitman will hopefully make it 5/5 with Labor Day. Nicolas Winding Refn has re-teamed with Ryan Gosling for Only God Forgives. Sofia Coppola, one of my absolute favourite directors, is coming back with The Bling Ring, which Im sure will be preeeeeeeetty. Danny Boyle is done with his Olympic opening ceremony and cutting off arms and such, and hes releasing Trance. Steve McQueen will probably make another flawless film with Twelve Years a Slave. Derek Cianfrance follows up his debut Blue Valentine with The Place Beyond the Pines. And my most anticipated for the year is definitely The Great Gatsby, because I looooooove Baz Luhrmann films.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is out to make himself even more perfect by making a movie of his own: Don Jons Addiction, which Im very much anticipating. As he enters the film-making world, Steven Soderbergh is set to leave it, with his final feature being Side Effects, starring Rooney Mara and Channing Tatum. Sad face.

As with any year, there are copious amounts of sequels. Im definitely not anticipating Grown Ups 2, but theres some other cool sequels to some movies that I really liked coming out this year. We have Iron Man 3, which kinda worries me since it is the third film in the series, but it looks like it is taking a darker route and it has Rebecca Hall, so Im sold. Star Trek Into Darkness looks awesome, and I loved Star Trek (although I may need to rewatch it). Kick-Ass is one of my all-time favourite movies, so Im interesting to see what they do in the second round. And then theres Thor: The Dark World, which I keep forgetting is happening this year, but therell be more Tom Hiddleston!

Along with Catching Fire and maybe an Oscar for Silver Linings Playbook, Jennifer Lawrence has Serena to look forward to in 2013. Greta Gerwigs TIFF hit Frances Ha has a release set up for mid this year. Violet and Daisy, starring Saoirse Ronan, played at TIFF in 2011, but has only just scored a release date for this year. To be honest, I didnt know what category to put Spring Breakers in, but I used to love Vanessa Hudgens so I stuck it in here. That movie looks insane. And then theres Stoker, which stars Mia Wasikowska, along with Nicole Kidman, Matthew Goode and Jacki Weaver. That looks insane, too.

Gangster Squad, after a production delay, hits cinemas on the 17th here - Im not sure Ill go and see it in cinemas since theres 2948 other movies coming out, but Im looking forward to eventually seeing it. I hadnt heard of Now You See Me until the trailer hit the web a couple of months back, and Im very excited to see it now. Man of Steel also looks pretty awesome, and I guess its as close to a Chris Nolan film as Im gonna get this year. Lastly, theres Warm Bodies, which looks just lovely. Plus, it would seem that Nicholas Hoult is the next big thing this year.

What do you think? What are your most anticipated for the year?

My Holiday Stitch Fix

My Holiday Stitch Fix

You may know that we have ten amazing children in this house, so you can imagine that the holidays are filled with quite a bit of fun and chaos....and boxes! Lots and lots of boxes! So when Stitch Fix emailed to offer to send me a holiday Fix, I thought I might enjoy receiving a box in the December mail that was actually for me! And Stitch Fix certainly delivered!

What is Stitch Fix?

Stitch Fix is an online styling service and fashion retailer. You pay just $20 for a styling fee that can later be applied to the purchase of your clothes. You are assigned your own personal stylist who will hand pick items just for you according to the answers of a questionnaire and notes from you. About 3 weeks later, you will receive your Stitch Fix box which will include instructions, a note from your stylist, and a postage paid envelope to return any unwanted items. If you keep all five items, you receive a 25% discount.

My December Fix

Alice Blue Corren Pleated Front Blouse $58

Out of all the items in the box, I think this top may be the most flattering on me. I have two other tops that are similar in style. (It reminds me a lot of my 41Hawthorne blouse from my 2nd Fix.) But there were so many details about it that I really loved...I actually really like tabbed sleeves -is that weird?-, the pleats are really pretty and interesting, and I looooove this neckline. This one is a keeper and I think Ill wear it often.

41Hawthorne Kenny Faux Leather Trim Open Cardigan $88
Bancroft Joolie Hammered Circle Necklace $34

So, my favorite Charlie Brown character is Linus. I can so relate to him. I love my blanket. Its fluffy and comfortable and Im not kidding, I feel joy when I climb into bed and snuggle up under my blanket. I tell you all of this, because this sweater makes me feel like I am wearing my blanket. The yarn of this fabric is not scratchy at all...its smooth, almost silky. While I dont feel its the most flattering look for me, this sweater is so comfortable and so warm, I have no doubt that it will get the most use from my closet. Plus, my 13 year old begged me to keep it. Even though shes a much smaller frame than me, it looked adorable on her and she loved the feel of it too.

I was a little uncertain about the necklace at first, but it looked so cute in the photos with my blue top that I decided it was a good keep too.

Daniel Rainn Acarda V-neck Blouse $68
Kut from the Kloth Kate Distressed Boyfriend Jean $78

When I opened the box my eyes were immediately drawn to the Acarda Blouse. I absolutely adore the colors of this top. The back has some really fun details that I like and I know Ill get as much wear out of it in our humid summers as I did my Papermoon Blouse last summer. I havent had a chance to play with it much, but I think I can pair it with some sweaters in my closet and wear it before summer gets here too.

Of course, my favorite part of Stitch Fix is how they customize each order. I told my stylist that I had been on the hunt for a good pair of boyfriend jeans. Every Stitch Fix box includes a note from your stylist, and in my note she assured me she was sending their best selling pair! I really do love them. They are so comfortable and fit perfectly. They were the first item that I tore the tags off of and Ive worn them at least three time since getting them last week. Please dont judge me.

This was my second home run with Stitch Fix and considering Ive only received four boxes from them, I have to say thats outstanding odds! I highly recommend giving Stitch Fix a try. Again you only pay a $20 styling fee and can send back anything you dont want - no shipping charge! If you sign up through my referral link, I do receive a referral credit and I absolutely appreciate it!! :)

My 15 Top Obsessions of 2012

My 15 Top Obsessions of 2012

You know me...I get obsessed with things rather easily. Like seriously, I have obsessive issues that sometimes need to be dialled back before people think Im crazy (case in point: I get asked to put Christmas decorations up. The first thing I think of is to put up tinsel Batmans in honour of The Dark Knight Rises which came out four weeks before Christmas). However, heres some which I havent been able to control over the year. The fact that Ive made a list of 15 and still missed out a whole lot of them is rather disturbing.

15. Independent cinema
Ive always loved independent cinema, but moreso this year, because it has become increasingly easier to get my hands on. Luckily, a lot of the stuff is going through Madman (a supplier here in NZ), meaning I get to catch up on them a bit earlier on the preview discs. While I may not have seen bigger films like Argo or The Hobbit just yet (nor will I until they come out on DVD), I have seen wonderful films like Your Sisters Sister and Bernie already thanks to that wonderful preview drawer. Just keep em coming, Madman.

14. Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Ive always loved JGL, too, but the guy has been really flying this year. Sure, there was Premium Rush, which must have been quite a big flop since it has been delayed until March next year here (meaning it will go straight-to-DVD), but he was also in Steven Spielbergs Lincoln, and in The Dark Knight Rises - in a performance which I thought had its own wonderfulness about it. By far the best thing of his year, though, was Looper, which was a freakin awesome film itself, but JGL, weird eyebrows and nose and all, was so badass it almost hurt. I also saw 50/50 for the first time this year, where I completely fell for him. Hes also doing awesome stuff with his HitRecord project and hes just finished shooting his writing/directorial feature debut. Do the wonders ever cease? It would appear not - he also did some Magic Mike moves on SNL. Lawd.

13. The Great Gatsby
I finally read this whole book this year and it is safe to say, it is probably my favourite book of all time. F. Scott Fitzgerald really had a way with words. Also falling under this umbrella is Baz Luhrmanns forthcoming adaptation, which was my most anticipated movie for the year after The Dark Knight Rises. Why? Because a) haters gon hate but I love Baz Luhrmanns films, b) the trailers were just effing divine and they literally inspired a 1920s phase I had going on for a little while, c) Leonardo DiCaprio looks fiiiiiiiiiiine and d) that poster with Elizabeth Debicki as Jordan Baker also looks fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiine. Im honestly so excited for this film I combust everytime I think about it.

12. Michael Fassbender
I loved him last year but seeing Shame and Prometheus this year just reaffirmed my love. Shame was by far the best performance Ive seen all year, and one of my favourites ever. And even though David had a few issues in Prometheus, I couldnt believe I was watching my darling Fassy up there. Seriously, he is one of the best actors out there right now.

11. Daniel Craig
When I was 11, I had a huge crush on Daniel Craig. With Skyfall and last years The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo being released this year, that crush came right on back. He was brilliant in both of those films, but heres why I love him:

10. Princess Merida
I loved Brave more than most it would seem, and theres one huge reason for that: Princess Merida. With her curly red hair (who definitely made me appreciate my ringlet curls a lot more), cute Scottish accent and badass archery skills, it is hard not to love Disneys latest heroine. Which is also why I dressed up as her for the Christmas parade.

9. Tom Hiddleston
Easily my favourite part of The Avengers. Also, he seems like the nicest person on Earth apart from someone else on this list. And his tweets are incredibly sweet, especially around Oscar time when he got almost as excited as I did when Rooney Mara got nominated for Best Actress. I imagine he and Loki couldnt be more different.

8. Shame
This film floored me in a way that no film has ever done before. It was just so wonderfully put together that it is just about flawless. Plus, Steve McQueens style has left me in a daze that I still cant click out of. That guy knows how to set up a camera.

7. The Perks of Being a Wallflower
While The Great Gatsby is my favourite book ever, The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky pretty much changed my life. I definitely wasnt expecting it to be that affecting, but by the end, I was bawling my eyes out. I dont need to remind anyone of how excited I am to see the movie, and how high the expectations that I have for it. Which Im sure will be more than met.

6. Lana Del Rey
I rarely branch outside of movie music (terrible, I know), but in September, I decided to give Lana Del Rey a go. Then I bought her album Born to Die, and I pretty much havent listened to much else ever since. I got the Paradise edition for Christmas, so guess what will be accompanying me while I clean shelves? Seriously, I love her style, her voice, and her rather different music. Shes the best.

5. Ezra Miller
Ever since I saw We Need to Talk About Kevin on that earthquakey night of July the 3rd, I have been in love with Ezra Miller. I tried to deny it for a long time because that was just weird as he played a killer in that movie, but after seeing the trailer a few too many times, Ezra Miller became my husband. Hes just so worldly, even though he is so young, and so different. And then theres his cheekbones. Sigh.

4. Matthew McConaughey
This may come as a surprise, but I must say, nothing has brought me joy quite like Matthew McConaughey turning his career around. He used to be one of my least favourite actors, but I saw The Lincoln Lawyer last year which just hinted at what hes capable of. But when I saw the wonderfully crazy Killer Joe last month, I was completely stunned by his work. And then there was Magic Mike and Bernie to back up his roll into becoming a sought after actor. I cant wait to see what he does in The Dallas Buyers Club next year - his dedication to that role is kind of scary.

3. The Dark Knight Rises
I know, you probably all thought that this would be number one. Alas, while I loved going to see this and Ive been pretty much obsessed with it all year, there a couple of others that beat it. However, I would love to go back in time and see it that first time again. Even on my fourth watch earlier this week, I still cried like a baby and had my eyes glued to the screen the entire time. Nolan, you beast.

2. Downton Abbey
Before the end of the Christmas holidays earlier this year, I decided I would finally watch Downton Abbey to see what all the fuss was about. I was finished those first two seasons a lot faster than I thought I would be. I just love this show so much - it is well written, performed, put together. It has everything. And no, Im not to be deemed as an old lady for loving it so much. Most of my friends are really into it now. But I still cant forgive it for that terribly awful thing that happened in season three (I cried so much for a whole hour after seeing it - and it wasnt just tears, it was full on crying), and now I hear the Christmas special for this year was quite sad. I honestly dont know why I keep watching it when all it does is break my heart.

1. Jessica Chastain
The most wonderfully perfect human being on this Earth. Words cant even describe how much I love her so Im not going to try.

What do you think? Got any favourites here? Or any obsessions of your own for this year?

My Children Are Not A Burden

My Children Are Not A Burden

I have joked that I cant leave the house with my kids if Im not in a really good mood. Everyone stops us. EVERYONE. I get it - its hard to pass up commenting on twins and a toddler. And my kids are generally quite happy. Theyre practically asking for people to stop and chat.

The one thing people say over and over is how hard it must be. How I have my hands full. How much work raising three kids is. And while, yes, these things can be true, I refuse to imply in front of my children that they are a burden. I always kindly respond that "my kids are absolutely wonderful" and that "Im so lucky". Somehow no one is satisfied by this answer. Of course there are some days when I want to pull my hair out. But, really, I do appreciate that I have pretty great kids.

I just hate the idea of being so negative about our kids. Especially while their impressionable ears are listening. Whats the lesson in that? Whats the message we convey?

At the end of the day, my kids are not a burden. They are a challenge. They keep me busy. They are silly, and fun, and manage to get 62% of every meal on the floor. They are so amazing. Ridiculously cute. And I really mean it when I say Im the lucky one.
