Montessori This Week

Montessori This Week

I usually try to put together Montessori lessons or any other activity after my daughters are asleep. I find that once they see me getting into materials, closets, etc., they want to get involved too. This weekend I neglected to get together some Montessori activities for the week so I found myself, Monday morning, going through the closet and putting things together. As a result my daughter picked mostly old favorites she wanted to do.

This activity was new to my youngest daughter. I tried the golf tees, styrofoam and hammer before but found it so messy. This time I cut smaller pieces of styrofoam and used a tray with a good edge. It actually is working well and one of her favorites. I also cut about 5 more styrofoam pieces that sit on the shelf next to the tray so that once the used one has reached it limit she can easily get a new one.

(This is really as messy as it got.)

Mystery bag- two of each shape, one in the bag, the other held in the hand. We took turns finding the matches.

Open and Close- she insisted on this activity because she loves the little dolls that hide inside. I need to come up with a more challenging version. (Maybe for next week!)

In addition to this we also used a metal inset and knobless cylinders for stacking.

My Me Made May16 Week 2

My Me Made May16 Week 2

( I should explain that the dress has zebra buttons at the back, and the T-shirt has little zebras all over it. Can you guess the theme for Day 8s outfit?)

Wow! Week 2 is over, this challenge is flying by, as far as Im concerned. How has it been for you? The weather has been really lovely this week, which has definitely made getting dressed a bit easier and more fun. Most of my maternity clothing is still with my sister-in-law (who had her third little boy this week!), so Im making do with a limited selection of warm-weather appropriate things. If it stays this sunny, Im going to have to whip up a T-shirt or two...

My Week So Far

My Week So Far

I just thought Id quickly drop in and share some photos from my phone over the past few days... I take approximately 100 photos a day. Whether its for work, or personal... there are a lot.

Anyway...
Wednesday and Thursday I painted a really fun mural on the ceiling of a playroom for a client. She had me over for a consult, and basically let me take the reigns from there. I was inspired by some vintage toys that she had, and thats where I got the color scheme from. Ill post final pics of this project next week, but here are some teasers for now:

 photo BA4C53C3-160E-4BA4-B29A-F2F43AD41E55_zpshkhpgw2s.jpg
our awesome color scheme. Inspired by Dr. Seuss! I was an idiot, and got wayyyy too much paint. I could have bought all quart sizes. I never do stuff like that, but for some reason I wasnt sure if the quart sizes were going to be big enough. Oh well.

we decided to do a dotted ceiling, and had the walls painted in Sherwin Williams "Swimming," before I came in. Generally, I like Benjamin Moore, but SW has great bright colors, in my opinion.

 photo 98000F19-87DC-40E4-8C35-56D396411C86_zpsfwkd3pr6.jpg
I made a compass to draw my circles with! it worked great. I used it mainly for the big ones - the smaller ones I was able to just eyeball and free hand paint on.

wweeeeeeeeee!! fun, huh? This is not a finished shot, but its a good teaser. There was still another color left to do, and some more dots to be added.

We also had the closet painted in a bright, tomatoey, Dr Seussy red:

 photo C5FC4774-9964-4091-AC68-E1C2386C9568_zpsbijiysgh.jpg
I suggested that we paint the inside tomato red, and my client had the doors removed so that the kids can get to their arts closet easily! We are going to get some good baskets and make it all cute. All the trim/doors is getting a fresh coat of white paint today.  I added the turquoise to the barn door that is in there - doesnt it look cute?! I always say that things turn out best when clients just let me go with my flow. haha! By the way, you may have seen some of these already if you follow me on instagram (@kristenfdavisdesigns). I cant help but post stuff like this as I go, when Im painting and getting excited.

anyway...in other news...

I visited a local glass artist in Cabbagetown the other day, for another design project Im working on. She makes stained glass art, and her stash was beautiful:

 photo A50FB78C-9157-4817-B1D4-0A45C17467AD_zpswflb0pru.jpg
I will share the final project with you when its done.

Another fun project I completed yesterday was this painting:

 photo 2F8081B8-5522-4CFC-A159-C829E220007E_zps11b4uohl.jpg

it was a commission, and they wanted red/teals/blue-navys. I think its fun and playful. Reminds me of a goldfish pond?! I cant wait to see it installed in their house!

one last project I finished this week (I told you I have been busy - and I still did another project this week that I havent shared yet either) is a toy box for a client. Here is what it looked like before:

and now:

My Me Made May16 Week 1

My Me Made May16 Week 1

(fairy queen: Day 7)

Happy first week of MMMay16 everyone! If youve been taking part, how have you found it so far? Any discoveries or lessons learnt? My challenge has been going well. Ive surpassed by pledge by not wearing any secondhand knitwear (which I had allowed occasional use of in my pledge). However, putting on my borrowed, mass-produced maternity jeans and trousers each day somehow feels like a cheat, even though I feel it would be pointless and a waste to try making a bunch of maternity trousers for such a limited time when I already have all of these other pairs at my disposal. So Ill just have to get my head around that.

Its been really fun having Dolores involved this year too, although getting her to cooperate with the photos isnt always easy. Ive been sharing daily documentation pics of her outfits only on Instagram as well, which has been more fun than trying to get awkward selfies of myself!

N O V E L T Y Amsterdam Fashion Week Tickets Giveaway

/ Most anticipated
Jef Montes show is what I am most excited about during the entire Amsterdam Fashion Week. Ever since I saw his impressive work first come down the runway at the Artez 2012 graduation show, where these pictures were taken, Ive been a huge fan. It is amazing how Jef approaches materials in a high tech way and how he translates inspiration coming from gothic architecture into modern silhouettes on bodies. Jef tells me that his graduation pieces were only a blue print of many more ideas. He even gave a little clue about his upcoming collection; to take the wet look of the fiberglass dresses very literally and that it will be all about light. I can not wait!

/ Two Tickets To Give Away
Im beyond excited to meet some of my readers give away tickets for you guys to join me during Vodafones Fashion Lab at AFW. Jef Montes will be presenting his collection at the Vodafone Firsts Fashion Lab; a cool initiative for new talent to showcase on a professional platform for the first time. (For those who dont get the tickets, no need to feel left out! You can see the show live via the Fashion Week app. And you dont even have to dress up. Or leave your laptop and bed. )

My Pregnancy Journal Week 16

My Pregnancy Journal Week 16

As Im rushing from one task to another, tripping over clutter and toys, answering endless questions, refereeing the last sibling argument of the day... I mean it, Ive had it. Just be nice to one another or at least handle it yourselves...And thats when I feel it.

Two swift movements.  Deep within.  Is that what I think it is?

Two days later.  The presents unwrapped, the clutter hidden away.  Im sinking down into the first peace of the evening.  A little body snuggles into my side and lays his head on my shoulder...There it is again.

Just a small flutter.

I reach down with one hand and press into the skin of my abdomen.  Searching.  Will my fingertips fill a kick?  A push back in the palm of my hand?  Not yet.  But there is a sure flutter.  Movement inside.

The little one sees my hand and lifts his head. "Is your baby awake?"  he asks, wide-eyed.

"I think so," I smile.

He smiles too and I wonder if there is anything better in life than this.

Thoughts:

Wow! I probably say this at the end of every Me-Made-May, but this month really flew by. I feel I was barely able to catch my breath, let alone dress mindfully each morning. But maybe thats where the value of this challenge lies for me: to get to the end and see that I have already made a successful selection of clothes that can see me through each step of a crazy month. Not that taking documentation photos is at all the point of course, but Im pleased that I got a photo of myself from all but two of the days so I can reflect on the challenge now its drawn to a close. Getting photos of a toddler everyday was impossible as well! I loved seeign her in the things that I make her everyday, but with her increasing desire to wear only pink sparkly dresses, I see that Im going to have to make some garments for her soon that we can both agree on.

What I learnt:
  • I have really nailed my colour palette. Navy, black and grey form the base, with denim, stripes and leopard print featuring regularly. Pops of mustard, red and turquoise provide the accents. Having come to most of my colour conclusions back in 2010, this means that by now each of my creations work with a number of others, and I have no wardrobe-orphans.
  • Maternity dressing is very efficient. When you have a limited number of items that fit your current shape and size, it really makes getting dressed each day a very quick process that needs very little thought. Its refreshing not to dwell over what I should wear, and Id like to streamline my non-maternity clothing selection a little more for an easier life when this pregnancy is over.
  • Im on top of my cardi game. My initial pledge for this years challenge allowed for the occasional wear of a secondhand (i.e. non-me-made) cardigan. Thanks to the completion of my Cabernet cardigans (#1, #2 and #3) I didnt need to wear a secondhand cardi once. My mustard and navy ones are now so firmly part of my regular rotation that I dont know what I did without them!
  • More bottoms: more fun. Thanks to some very generous friends lending me lots of pairs of maternity jeans and trousers, I currently have more bottoms to choose from each morning than Ive ever had. I realise that I usually dress bottom up in that Ill choose which jeans, trousers or skirt I want to wear that day and then think what Ive got to go with them thats clean. Having so many pairs at my disposal has allowed me the pleasure of dressing top down: picking the fun part of the outfit first because Im bound to have something to dress my legs in that will work with the top part that Ive selected. The well-fitting trouser quest I was on last year (you can jump into the saga in this post) really was a worthy endeavour, and one I should get back on when my post-pregnancy body decides what shape and size it should remain at for a while.
If you took part in #MMMay16 this year I really hope that your personal challenge lead you to some interesting and useful discoveries, and even if at times you found the going tough and/or boring, that you had some fun along the way. I LOVE to read your post-challenge thoughts, so please let mwe know your thoughts and feelings on it in the comments section or by leaving me a link to a post if youve written about your experience elsewhere.
