Monday Made it 3 For Me!

Monday Made it 3 For Me!

Project #1:

This Monday Made It, is rather disappointing.  I had hoped to make my own vinyl.  I found a blog on Pinterest that explained how to make homemade vinyl.

http://brandyscrafts.blogspot.com/2010/05/contact-paper-cardstock-wall-decals.html
I thought, “that sounds AMAZING!”  I keep looking at all these different vinyl stores online, but can’t make up my mind.  I’m not a great decision maker when it comes to these sorts of things, and I just flip from shop to shop and never buy a thing.  If I could make my own vinyl, having chosen the paper and colors in person– well that would solve my problems!
P8101512
So I tried it.  It wasn’t easy.  Contact paper is a difficult medium!  I don’t have enough hands to keep it flat…seriously I was using my chin at one point.  But eventually I was able to sort of work it out, and I anxiously awaited 12 pieces of homemade vinyl.

Well…as the cardstock dried…it became very loosely stuck to the contact paper.  Should I have used more mod podge?  Something heavier?  I put a heavy binder on them as they dried.

Then, when I tried using my Silhouette on them, it failed.  The letters were cut but the cardstock separated from the contact paper.  Needless to say I’m disappointed and back to square 1 when it comes to vinyl.

Project #2:

I still was able to make my Bienvenidos Banner using my cameo.  I just used a touch of hot glue to attach the letters instead of homemade vinyl. The Silhouette cut the pennants (including circles for ribbon) and the letters.  It was super easy!

I chose my color scheme with Kristen’s flipped signs in mind…I love everything she does, so this seemed like a safe plan.

Project #3:

This week I also made these fun duct tape flower pens.  (Once I have vinyl I want to add some grass to the tin).  I also need to add a bit of foam to the bottom of my recycled Tazo Tea tins, because they are too deep for everything I make.  I was thinking they could be some sort of incentive for the kids – after so many pieces of bling you get to use the flower pen…I could have sold that with second graders, but I’m thinking fifth graders won’t buy into it…they’re still cute though!

I used this tutorial that I found on Pinterest.

It was really easy to follow.  I felt like my fingerprints had been ripped off after so much duct tape use, but apparently not since they scanned properly for my background check for my new employer.

Project #4:

I also had ordered these posters from Vistaprint, and had the dry mounted at Hobby Lobby.  They were too flimsy and I was afraid they would get destroyed in my classroom.  The dry mounting cost $9.00 a piece, but if you consider I got them for free at the clearance sale, I think it’s a good deal!

Krista @ The Second Grade Super Kids made something earlier this summer with the quote from Gandhi – and I loved her idea!  Be the change you want to se in the world.  These will look great in my classroom and are perfect for dual language!

That’s it for this week!
Happy creating!

My Me Made May16 Week 2

( I should explain that the dress has zebra buttons at the back, and the T-shirt has little zebras all over it. Can you guess the theme for Day 8s outfit?)

Wow! Week 2 is over, this challenge is flying by, as far as Im concerned. How has it been for you? The weather has been really lovely this week, which has definitely made getting dressed a bit easier and more fun. Most of my maternity clothing is still with my sister-in-law (who had her third little boy this week!), so Im making do with a limited selection of warm-weather appropriate things. My Me Made May16 Week 1

My Me Made May16 Week 1

(fairy queen: Day 7)

Happy first week of MMMay16 everyone! If youve been taking part, how have you found it so far? Any discoveries or lessons learnt? My challenge has been going well. Ive surpassed by pledge by not wearing any secondhand knitwear (which I had allowed occasional use of in my pledge). However, putting on my borrowed, mass-produced maternity jeans and trousers each day somehow feels like a cheat, even though I feel it would be pointless and a waste to try making a bunch of maternity trousers for such a limited time when I already have all of these other pairs at my disposal. So Ill just have to get my head around that.

Its been really fun having Dolores involved this year too, although getting her to cooperate with the photos isnt always easy. Ive been sharing daily documentation pics of her outfits only on Instagram as well, which has been more fun than trying to get awkward selfies of myself!

Thoughts:

Wow! I probably say this at the end of every Me-Made-May, but this month really flew by. I feel I was barely able to catch my breath, let alone dress mindfully each morning. But maybe thats where the value of this challenge lies for me: to get to the end and see that I have already made a successful selection of clothes that can see me through each step of a crazy month. Not that taking documentation photos is at all the point of course, but Im pleased that I got a photo of myself from all but two of the days so I can reflect on the challenge now its drawn to a close. Getting photos of a toddler everyday was impossible as well! I loved seeign her in the things that I make her everyday, but with her increasing desire to wear only pink sparkly dresses, I see that Im going to have to make some garments for her soon that we can both agree on.

What I learnt:
  • I have really nailed my colour palette. Navy, black and grey form the base, with denim, stripes and leopard print featuring regularly. Pops of mustard, red and turquoise provide the accents. Having come to most of my colour conclusions back in 2010, this means that by now each of my creations work with a number of others, and I have no wardrobe-orphans.
  • Maternity dressing is very efficient. When you have a limited number of items that fit your current shape and size, it really makes getting dressed each day a very quick process that needs very little thought. Its refreshing not to dwell over what I should wear, and Id like to streamline my non-maternity clothing selection a little more for an easier life when this pregnancy is over.
  • Im on top of my cardi game. My initial pledge for this years challenge allowed for the occasional wear of a secondhand (i.e. non-me-made) cardigan. Thanks to the completion of my Cabernet cardigans (#1, #2 and #3) I didnt need to wear a secondhand cardi once. My mustard and navy ones are now so firmly part of my regular rotation that I dont know what I did without them!
  • More bottoms: more fun. Thanks to some very generous friends lending me lots of pairs of maternity jeans and trousers, I currently have more bottoms to choose from each morning than Ive ever had. I realise that I usually dress bottom up in that Ill choose which jeans, trousers or skirt I want to wear that day and then think what Ive got to go with them thats clean. Having so many pairs at my disposal has allowed me the pleasure of dressing top down: picking the fun part of the outfit first because Im bound to have something to dress my legs in that will work with the top part that Ive selected. The well-fitting trouser quest I was on last year (you can jump into the saga in this post) really was a worthy endeavour, and one I should get back on when my post-pregnancy body decides what shape and size it should remain at for a while.
If you took part in #MMMay16 this year I really hope that your personal challenge lead you to some interesting and useful discoveries, and even if at times you found the going tough and/or boring, that you had some fun along the way. I LOVE to read your post-challenge thoughts, so please let mwe know your thoughts and feelings on it in the comments section or by leaving me a link to a post if youve written about your experience elsewhere.

My 15 Favourite New To Me Films of 2012

My 15 Favourite New To Me Films of 2012

Sure, there are still four days left in the year and usually I manage to fill these last days up with some great movies, but I might as well list down my 15 favourite new-to-me movies Ive seen this year. It was a rather hard task to whittle these down to so few, especially considering there were over 300 movies in contention - meaning that I achieved my New Years resolution of seeing at least 300 new-to-me movies (how I found the time, Ill never know). So here we have my 15 favourite new-to-me films of the year, and what a good movie watching year I had.

15. The Heiress
Admittedly, this 1949 classic starring Olivia De Havilland and Montgomery Clift was one I watched because I couldnt go and see Jessica Chastain and Dan Stevens in the stage production of it, currently on Broadway. However, this was a more than worthy substitute. Olivia De Havilland gave a firey performance as Catherine Sloper, a woman who is all too vulnerable to everything but eventually comes into her own. A really interesting portrayal of society ideals put to the test in the 1800s.

14. The Red Riding Trilogy
So technically these are three films, but you cant really judge the separate films on their own merits - they must be viewed as a whole. I watched the three British made-for-TV films over one night before I started school again, and I was so impressed with how intricately detailed this was and how everything came together. It was a stunning achievement for a made-for-TV project - in fact, TV just keeps getting stronger and stronger every year.

13. Breathless
I checked out Jean-Luc Godards masterpiece as part of my French New Wave month, and I really enjoyed it for its simplicity and of course, people just talking to each other. Sadly, now, if I should ever talk about this film with anyone, theyd probably get it confused with the straight-to-DVD Ray Liotta film of the same name. Oh, Ray Liotta, you have to take the fun out of everything.

12. My Neighbour Totoro
This movie was just so cute that I wanted to hug it. And when I go to Japan I will probably buy every Totoro related thing I can find. Well, every Totoro thing that will be able to fit in my suitcase without difficulty.

11. Mystic River
I wouldnt say Im exactly an expert on Clint Eastwood films (but seeing J. Edgar has made me a little uneasy towards his films), but Mystic River is the finest film of his that I have seen. It is a rather depressing, gritty tale of how everyones lives end up colliding and how the past comes back to haunt them. Sean Penn, Tim Robbins and Kevin Bacon were all fantastic in this film.

10. Alien
Amongst all the Prometheus buzz (that was both good and bad in equal measure), I felt like the only person on Earth who didnt really care about that film, but it did serve as a pleasant reminder for me to get off my butt and watch Alien. And what a good thing that was, because I absolutely loved this film, despite the fact that Im really not all that fond of sci-fi films. It is probably one of the greatest horror movies of all time - and sometimes when I feel ill, I wont deny that the thought of that alien bursting out of John Hurts chest doesnt cross my mind.

9. Belle De Jour
Among my New Years resolutions was to watch more foreign films. I cant say if I really succeeded in that (I should have set a number or something), but I did start early - I remember watching Belle De Jour, starring the divine Catherine Deneuve, all the way back in February. Luis Bunuel created a simply beautiful, mysterious piece of film that was quite different from anything Id seen at that point.

8. The Umbrellas of Cherbourg
Another Catherine Deneuve film (shes been a big player in my 2012, as in one of the first days of the year I also saw Repulsion, which only just missed out on a place here), but this time, we have a musical. Thats not to say that it is all happy. Even though it is one of the most colourful films Ive ever seen, it is doused in sadness. Kinda like Les Miserables. Okay, it is nothing like Les Miserables.

7. Vivre Sa Vie
Thanks to that French New Wave month, I saw some great films, and this one was the best of them. Again, there are people just talking with each other, but then theres that scene between Anna Karina and the man at the restaurant is still pretty much the best conversation Ive ever seen.

6. Days of Heaven
I waited around eight months for this to finally become available on Fatso, and I just about died when it was. And then I just about died when I actually watched it because it was so beautiful. I did things somewhat backwards - The Tree of Life was my introduction to Terrence Malick, even though everyone was like "if youre not familiar with Malick, it just wont work for you." It actually did work for me, but that film and Days of Heaven are two extremely different films. Theyre joined by beauty, but Days of Heaven feels much more natural. I just adore every sunset shot in it.

5. Grave of the Fireflies
I remember when I watched this, having a nice Friday night to myself. At the end of it, I was crying so much it hurt. It definitely rivalled that terribly awful thing in Downton Abbey as the most heartbreak a screen has ever caused me.

4. The Dark Knight Rises
This movie is amazing. That is all.

3. Mulholland Dr
This was another movie that took its time to become available on Fatso, too. It was also my introduction to David Lynch, and what an introduction it was. I just dont know how hed be able to sleep at night knowing that hed made a movie like this. Because it is so intricately great and beyond any realms of any imagination.

2. Shame
My favourite film of last year, easily, and one of my favourites of all time. It is as close to a modern masterpiece as well get: an observation of anguish, of a life teetering on the edge, performed with true bravura by Michael Fassbender. The film is beyond wonderful, and it is ground-breaking without trying to break any ground in the first place.

1. Goodfellas
I had to watch it a second time to fully appreciate its awesomeness, but it is right up there as one of my top favourites. Martin Scorseses masterpiece is thrilling, epic, and certainly makes the most of its 150 minute running time. Even Ray Liotta is really good in this film...it is a shame that he was never really able to carry that one on.

What do you think of these films? What were some of your favourite new-to-you films you saw this year?
