Movement on a Monday Dancing and Drawing
Movement on a Monday Dancing and Drawing
Lately, weve been pushing back the table in the dining room to make room for "ballet" dancing. I found and purchased a download of short ballet classics for children and my daughters have really liked dancing to the music.
They love dressing up and getting out the streamers.
The dancing helps get out some of that extra energy they have now that we arent outside nearly as long as we are the rest of the year. Ive noticed that extra energy seems to manifest itself around the 5 pm hour, just before dinner.
Having a little extra movement earlier in the day has helped make the "just before dinner hour" a little more calm and easier.
Today, we also got out the shaving cream for some drawing and writing. Since my oldest daughter is still perfecting a few of her numeral and letter formations, I was able to easily encourage some practice with the shaving cream.
Shaving cream is another alternative to writing in sand or cornmeal for letter and numeral formation. If my daughter wasnt sure about a letter, I would write it first, she would trace it and then make her own.
My daughters also drew in the shaving cream. The use of the shaving cream on a large surface allows for greater arm movements. The shaving cream and the smooth table surface also provides a great sensorial experience. This photo shows how my daughter was naturally drawing with both hands at the same time, which is a beneficial brain exercise. The shaving cream and the large surface naturally lend themselves to these types of movements. Of course, none of this matters to a 4 and 6 year old, they just care about having fun. And fun, it was!

Monday Offerings
Locally what we have going on is Ultimate KTV on Channel 5. You would be amazed at the talent being displayed on this television show. When the show airs on Tuesday nights, I am always amazed at how our Belizeans, with very little or no formal training whatsoever in music, can really display length, depth and breadth when belting out their favorite karaoke tunes. Celine Dion songs are a perennial favorite *lol*. However, every now and then, someone will throw in a classic from Shirley Bassey or Otis Redding complete with costume and props. While we have a dearth of international cable television, the Ultimate KTV is produced locally and the participants all reside here in the tropics. So can you really blame us, if things come to a screeching halt every Tuesday night while we sit entranced in front of the telly watching our very own local stars?

For those of you who love the game shows Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy, I would like to take a moment to mark the passing on Sunday, August 11th, of the legendary television producer, Mr. Merv Griffin. He was the creator of both Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy and he even wrote the little thinking song which is aired every time a Jeopardy episode comes on. Mr. Griffin was 82 years old at the time of his passing and it is estimated that his net worth came close to US$1.6 billion dollars. His favorite epitaph was Stay Tuned. May he rest in peace. Monday Made it 3 For Me!
Monday Made it 3 For Me!
Project #1:
This Monday Made It, is rather disappointing. I had hoped to make my own vinyl. I found a blog on Pinterest that explained how to make homemade vinyl.
http://brandyscrafts.blogspot.com/2010/05/contact-paper-cardstock-wall-decals.html
I thought, that sounds AMAZING! I keep looking at all these different vinyl stores online, but cant make up my mind. Im not a great decision maker when it comes to these sorts of things, and I just flip from shop to shop and never buy a thing. If I could make my own vinyl, having chosen the paper and colors in person well that would solve my problems!
So I tried it. It wasnt easy. Contact paper is a difficult medium! I dont have enough hands to keep it flat seriously I was using my chin at one point. But eventually I was able to sort of work it out, and I anxiously awaited 12 pieces of homemade vinyl.
Well as the cardstock dried it became very loosely stuck to the contact paper. Should I have used more mod podge? Something heavier? I put a heavy binder on them as they dried.
Then, when I tried using my Silhouette on them, it failed. The letters were cut but the cardstock separated from the contact paper. Needless to say Im disappointed and back to square 1 when it comes to vinyl.
Project #2:
I still was able to make my Bienvenidos Banner using my cameo. I just used a touch of hot glue to attach the letters instead of homemade vinyl. The Silhouette cut the pennants (including circles for ribbon) and the letters. It was super easy!
I chose my color scheme with Kristens flipped signs in mind I love everything she does, so this seemed like a safe plan.

Project #3:
This week I also made these fun duct tape flower pens. (Once I have vinyl I want to add some grass to the tin). I also need to add a bit of foam to the bottom of my recycled Tazo Tea tins, because they are too deep for everything I make. I was thinking they could be some sort of incentive for the kids after so many pieces of bling you get to use the flower pen I could have sold that with second graders, but Im thinking fifth graders wont buy into it theyre still cute though!
I used this tutorial that I found on Pinterest.
It was really easy to follow. I felt like my fingerprints had been ripped off after so much duct tape use, but apparently not since they scanned properly for my background check for my new employer.
Project #4:
I also had ordered these posters from Vistaprint, and had the dry mounted at Hobby Lobby. They were too flimsy and I was afraid they would get destroyed in my classroom. The dry mounting cost $9.00 a piece, but if you consider I got them for free at the clearance sale, I think its a good deal!
Krista @ The Second Grade Super Kids made something earlier this summer with the quote from Gandhi and I loved her idea! Be the change you want to se in the world. These will look great in my classroom and are perfect for dual language!

Thats it for this week!
Happy creating!

Monday Links and Other Stuff 45 Awards and Important Announcement
Monday Links and Other Stuff 45 Awards and Important Announcement
Im not watching anything tonight...but heres my important announcement:

Tomorrow morning I will be jetting off to Japan for 11 days, so naturally, I wont be around. I am going to Nagoya for seven days, as we are going to our sister school over there, and then we will be going to Tokyo for three days for free time. Very exciting stuff! While Im away I will miss three big awards season things: the Golden Globes, the BAFTA nominations and of course, the Oscar nominations which decided theyd be very early for some stupid reason. I wont be back until the 19th, so the Oscars will be old news by then, but I will be posting my thoughts. I wont be covering the Golden Globes, and I may cover the BAFTA noms (even though they have zilch power now, they may still be interesting). Hopefully yall will still be around by then!
Another important announcement:
I passed 500,000 hits today, so yay!
Video of the week:
Because this is hilarious - I want the rapping part to be my ringtone.

Awards...
Around the past couple of weeks, there have been a couple of awards going around. Since youve already seen them around, I wont bother with passing it on, as everyone has one now. If youre in my links list below, and you havent been nominated, say that I gave you one. Heres the rules to the Blog of the Year Award that I received from The Cinematic Spectacle and Defiant Success:

- Select the blog(s) you think deserve the "Blog of the Year 2012" Award.
- Write a blog post and tell us about the blog(s) you have chosen - theres no minimum or maximum number of blogs required - and "present" them with their award.
- Please include a link back to this page and include these rules in your post (please dont alter the rules or the badges!)
- Let the blog(s) you have chosen know that you have given them this award and share the "rules" with them You can now also join our Facebook group click "like" on this page "Blog of the Year 2012" Award Facebook group and then you can share your blog with an even wider audience
- As a winner of the award please add a link back to the blog that presented you with the award and then proudly display the award on your blog and sidebar and start collecting stars.
Second is the Versatile Blogger award which I received from The Cinematic Spectacle, Defiant Success, Lets Be Splendid About This, Azizas Picks, and the Very Inspiring Blogger award I received from Film Sloth. For each of them, I have to post seven facts about myself:

- I cannot stop listening to Lana Del Reys album Born to Die: The Paradise Edition.
- Hopefully on the 25th of January Im going to see Django Unchained with my friends - going to a movie on this day has become a bit of a tradition, as in 2011 we saw The Kings Speech on this day, and last year we saw War Horse.
- I once did the make-up for the towns production of Les Miserables, so this musical is very familiar to me.
- Im super excited to go on the plane tomorrow - like it is pretty much the thing Im the most excited for.
- I am making my calendar this year myself. This month, I made a page dedicated to Jessica Chastain, next months one is Oscar themed. I havent done the rest, though.
- I really wanna go to India to do some volunteer work, since that it is where my Grandma used to live, and because I like helping people.
- Since Ill probably be buying an iPhone while Im away, Im selling my iPod to my friend for an easy price: Looper on Blu-Ray. Im fairly sure that movies make me happier than actual money.
Blog of the Month...
With a new month comes a new blog on the sidebar, and this month, the honour goes to Josh at The Cinematic Spectacle. For some good Oscar coverage, and also plenty of going back in the day, this is the site where you wanna be. Theres so much variety!
Links...
Alex does a retrospective on the brilliant career of Quentin Tarantino - and it would seem that Alex has a lot of love for the guy.
Andrew tries to navigate the immensely difficult Best Supporting Actor race this year, and puts in a vote for Ewan McGregor for The Impossible. Anything could happen in that category, I tell ya.
One movie which I think is immensely underrated is Vamps, which is actually quite a sweet little comedy (plus it has Dan Stevens being cute). Alex (Film Forager) quite liked it too.
Our blog of the month has a brilliant list of the 10 things we need to know before the Oscar noms. Seems like we have another awesome year on our hands.
Dan Heaton checks out Black Swan, which gave me a bit of nostalgia since I was all crazy over it this time two years ago.
SDG has listed his 20 favourite new-to-me movies of the year - and his number one is awesomely awesome.
At the end of last year (haha, I love saying that), Ryan listed his favourite shots from 2012. We were blessed with cinematic beauty this year.
Everyone has been unveiling their top films of 2012, but I must point out Tylers list, which has a great, eclectic mix. Plus, Detachment was an amazing film.
And in the new year we got a couple of new mega-sites: Your Face and Movie Mezzanine. Check em out!
Final word:
Who would you most like to see in the Best Supporting Actor race this year?

Monday Morning
Monday Morning
Outside all is Monday drizzle and February dissatisfaction. Inside is peeling hands, radio jollity and books about bread. My hands are peeling because I cleaned some bits of the housing co-op we live in yesterday and didnt wear gloves. My hands look interestingly elderly, much like the time I tried to dye some hot pants (I was not wearing them at the time) and managed to get black dye all over my hands so had to soak them in bleach. They turned from black to red pretty quickly.
The radio is bordering between annoying and merry.
Ben wants to know whether or not I like rye bread.
Someone is banging and crashing around outside, but I cannot quite face the walk to the window to investigate.
Last week was half term so I didnt have to go to any of the schools I am currently doing projects in, which was a total joy. I swore to myself that I was going to Make The Most Of The Time by being extra creative and probably making some quite staggering leaps in the worlds of science and maths. As it turned out I was a bit creative and did nothing to further scientific progress whatsoever (unless the whole peeling hands thing can help somehow?).
Today, though, all is back to normal, and I must go to a school to run a drama club later on. Oh, you are thinking, that sounds lovely! How sweet! Well, yes. I am trying to feel that way about it too. (WARNING: DO NOT BLOG ABOUT WORK IT IS DANGEROUS! ABORT TRAIN OF THOUGHT NOW.)
Before that I am going to go swimming. After going swimming last week I wrote about my very mixed feelings towards it. Here, for your procrastination, are those thoughts.
*****
I just went swimming. I love it. I love sinking my head underneath the cool surface and then pushing out, chin up, to feel my hair sweeping back from my face. I love pushing off from the wall and aiming deep, with long, frog-like strokes pushing me towards the bottom until I have to come up for air. Before I started wearing goggles I never realized that swimming for exercise could be fun, but I love having open eyes in an underwater world. Watching the shimmering white webs of reflection on the bottom of the pool, stretching my arms towards them as I pull myself, suddenly light, through the blue water. Before googles I would have to swim, neck craned up, eyes squinting and ears pummeled by the echoing pool shouting and splashing. The difference is immense. I can hide in goggles. I feel in disguise, like I am shielded from normal interaction by having my eyes covered. I am a superhero of the slow lane.
I hate, totally and deeply loathe, every single moment until I get into the water. I hate queuing at the front desk. I hate the sodden, half-way between pool and outside world changing rooms with their sometimes muddy floors and the pants someone has accidentally left behind having inexplicably forgotten to put them on. I hate having to shove my stuff into a locker, something always threatens to leap out at the last minute, leaving me scrabbling on the wet tiles for a stray sock or pair of knickers. I hate that half the people are dressed and half are not. I hate the men, who appraise half-heartedly and leave me wanting to put many, many more clothes on. God, I hate walking along the side of the pool, covered only by the thinnest of purple sheen. I stare upwards and tell myself nobody cares, nobody is looking. Sometimes I see other people strutting, trotting or loping along, chatting or dreaming, and I wonder whether they too feel agonized by those transition moments.
Once I am in and my eyes are covered I am anonymous and dive through my imagination, back and forward. I watch the clock with half an eye.
Time spins and I swim, and eventually I have to get out, so I swim to the edge and cling with one hand to the steps while I adjust my swimming costume, pushing breasts under material as each one in turn tries to float helpfully to the surface. Hooking my thumbs into crucial bits of costume and tweaking, I push my chin in the air as I exit, and pretend to be rubbing my neck as I walk, covering my chest and trying to seem relaxed.
In the shower I stand facing the wall until I am finished, and walk, fake-relaxed, to my locker, around which three teenage boys have clustered. They are dressed for the outside and poised in strut-mode, confident and uproarious. I push through them, dripping and feeling horribly, painfully naked. I breathe in and pretend they arent there, they fall silent but do not move. I get my towel and wrap it quickly, then retrieve the rest of my things and make my way to a cubicle.
*****
So I will swim and then face the most difficult bit of my week at the moment (weirdly enough for something that seems as innocuous and adorable as a drama club - like a firebreathing puppy). Then it will all be over and I will have lived through it and the rest of my week will feel easier.
I am watching the clock in agony, knowing that soon I have to leave and then it will all nearly be happening. Time is being hugely unfair by refusing to skip past the shitty bits. Time is a bastard.

Monday Made It 2 Silhouette and Debbie Diller in one post!
Monday Made It 2 Silhouette and Debbie Diller in one post!
Ive officially demolished a Silhouette cutting mat in my first attempts at using it. But, that is irrelevant because I have made my first Silhouette project. Its not particularly awe-inspiring, but its a start.
I use numbers to keep track of my students and last year I wrote the numbers on sticks and just kept them in a container. Very blah, and uninspired. What would always happen was, I would misplace sticks that I had chosen because I had nowhere specific for the sticks that had been used I would also walk around with the holder and misplace that but I hope all that can be solved.
Ive created these bright fancy number sticks and holders. Now every stick has a home, called on or not! Bonus: everything is bright, so hopefully I cant misplace anything even if I set the tins in a random place.
Hopefully Ill do something much more fun for next week! Accepting all Silhouette tips and ideas! BTW the Tazo Tea Tins are incredibly difficult to recycle! It was a real chore taking off the labels even using the goo be gone stuff!
Next, I made these math work station mats. During summer school Ive noticed how the kids just love to roll the die as far as possible, and spread the counters all around them, and well you know how it is. Even after modeling and explaining, I still catch the odd flying die in the corner of my eye.
Debbie Diller did think of something for this and on page 40 of her book explains the mats. I bought the shelf-liner from the Dollar Tree. Duct tape I made two trips 40% off at Hobby Lobby and Michaels. So pretty cheap!
So there you have it! My latest creations.

I wont be posting again until I finish my back to school packets. So be on the look out for those. Theyll be perfect for dual language, bilingual classrooms and regular education teachers looking for some new read alouds and activities.
Happy Monday!
