Music To Get Concussion By
Music To Get Concussion By
At the gig last night there were about nine singers who were to perform with the house band. The venue was small with two floors, although the upper floor was more like a mezzanine. It was narrow with a spiral staircase curling up through the middle. There were plants, pictures on the wall and brightly-lit fish tanks throughout. The band was set up on the upper level in a room with a glass panelled roof. Round tables were placed throughout, chairs angled towards the musicians, with just narrow gaps for people to move around.
Some friends had been going to come but it was a Sunday and people had to work the next day. I didnt push it, ten pounds is a lot of money to most people I know. Anyway, sometimes its easier to just have to worry about the performance without having to concern myself with whether other people are having a good time or not. Upon arriving yesterday, though, I had mixed feelings. On the one hand I would have liked to have a conspirator with me, someone to share the nerves with and whose face I could rely upon to be friendly. On the other, ten pounds really is a lot and it seemed unfair to guilt my friends into coming. When I arrived, though, I felt suddenly very alone. I was exhausted already, having been in the studio the day before and then partying until four in the morning. I felt like my reserves of confidence had been tapped out and I was more than unusually intimidated by the crowd.
The place was packed. Full of loud, confident people with friends. People who had a sheen of wealth about them, who are all either beautiful or just have that expensive glow about them that confuses the eye into suspecting they might be. I stood in the corner, having waved my arrival and been handed a glass of wine. The room was warm and the windows were already beginning to steam up. I sipped at my wine. Another girl was singing so I listened with interest, occasionally pressing the cool glass against my face to ease my burning cheeks.
A woman was sitting with her friends at a two tables right next to the band-area. Those two tables and fifteen chairs she had reserved seemed to take up a considerable portion of the room, small as it was. She smiled warmly at me introduced herself to me as Carmella, one of the other singers. I was relieved to meet a friendly person, and began to feel more comfortable. Slowly the fifteen chairs began to fill up as her friends arrived, shrugging off coats and bags, acquiring drinks and sitting down.
Within ten minutes of my arrival the place was heaving. Not a spare chair in sight and people crowding to fill the space around the furniture. As the temperature rose I felt my cheeks growing pinker and longed to sit down.
Eventually it was my turn to sing. I stood and took the microphone after I had been introduced ("the jazz party débutante!") and, after turning to the band, started to sing Black Coffee. I stood straight, looked into the faces of the sheened strangers and felt myself relax.
Almost immediately some more of Carmellas friends arrived. Standing less than two feet away from me they clattered in, talking and shifting chairs about with a screech. Carmella herself stood up and began loudly directing members of the group and seeming to try to rearrange the whole seating arrangement. I was jostled and stepped on numerous times, singing all the while and attempting to see through to the people who had been watching. The chatter exclamations continued as I struggled to be heard through the noise and seen through the bodies. I tried not to glare too obviously at the interrupters and Carmella bustled around the table, handing out wine glasses and welcoming people extravagantly.
They sat and quieted down eventually. By the end of the song I could once more see the people to whom I was performing, but I felt angry to be so ignored so I think I over-sang the rest of my set. Its difficult in those sorts of situations (it was not the first and I am sure it wont be the last) to keep the anger out of my voice. It went well on the whole, but I just felt that the rudeness was inexcusable, particularly coming from another performer. It wasnt my gig so I resisted making a sarcastic comment asking everybody pointedly whether they were finally sitting comfortably. Perhaps I should have done.
When I had finished I went to the toilets, and saw that my cheeks were scarlet and I had an attractive-looking heat rash creeping across my chest in a sinister fashion. Positioning my hair to try to hide it, I took a deep breath and stepped back into the foray, resolving to talk to people and make friends. I lasted about another hour, getting increasingly hot and tired. I also managed to crack my head hard on an air-conditioning vent whilst standing precariously on a chair, causing most people around me to embarrassingly check whether I was alright and leaving hot tears welling up in my eyes. After that I just threw in the towel and went home, leaving the rich and heat-immune to their party.
It was an interesting sort of gig. Im glad I did it, but it was quite stressful. The recording on Saturday went really fun and was in a great studio, so my high from that has not yet quite ebbed, despite being back in office temp costume today (the most important accessory for which is my patented "Mask of Boredom").
Each gig is different. Some are unexpectedly great, but at other times it just takes one person to take the shine off the whole thing. I dont like having to fight to be heard, and I dont like to over-sing as a result. Neither do I enjoy hitting my head dramatically in public whilst standing on a chair, but I suppose these are both things that just sometimes have to be endured.

NANS sends an open letter to ONDO state governor
NANS sends an open letter to ONDO state governor
The national association of NIGERIAN students sent ondo state gov. an open letter, read it in quote below
"It is with a heavy heart full of frustration and disbelief
that the above named association write to inform the
general public on the health situation of the survivors
of the ghastly motor accident that happened on the
13th July, 2012 along the Akure Owo road that
claimed the lives of Four colleagues of ours who were
on their way from Abuja where they went to grace an
award presentation to Governor Olusegun Rahman
Mimiko of Ondo State by the national Body of NANS.
We have subject ourselves to this means of
communication after a breakdown of relationship with
the state government on the aforementioned issue.
Ladies and gentlemen of the press, it is pertinent to
give a brief account of what the situation has been.
Immediately after the accident, the Governor himself
visited Federal Medical Centre, Owo where the victims
were rushed to for medical attention. He thereafter
ordered that those whose case was severe be
transferred to University College Hospital (UCH),
Ibadan, Oyo State. This was done and four of our
comrades were moved to UCH where they were
attended to. Surgeries were carried out on them.
Months after, the management of the Hospital
abruptly stopped administering treatment on their
patients (our comrades) on the ground that theyve
not been paid for the service they rendered. This
almost led to the death of the only survivor that was
still on admission at the hospital. This action prompted
comrades in Ondo State to spring into action and
protested the neglect.
However, our comrade was discharged from the
hospital and brought to Akure. They were promised
that their physiotherapy will continue at the State
Specialist Hospital, Akure at the expense of the
government. Ab initio, the government kept to this
promise. Another round of surgeries was carried out
here in Akure. They were discharged and their
physiotherapy continued
One of the survivors whos condition seems critical,
Biodun Owonola has to go to the hospital everyday to
get necessary medical attention. This stopped after a
couple of weeks after his discharge from the hospital.
He immediately after the stoppage of the
transportation to the hospital, wrote a letter to the
State Government requesting for some essential
needs so as to go for clinical follow up both at the SSH,
Akure and UCH, Ibadan.
His request was turned down, when his school
resumed, he wrote another letter in July, 2013 to the
state government to please help him with mobility as
it is near impossibility to get him into public transport
cause of his condition (still on wheelchair). This we
were told by the government has been approved by
the state governor. But since resumption, he has been
handicapped to get the necessary apparatus that will
enable him get his degree as all left is a semester for
him to graduate.
Since our agitation has not been met, we have been
fenced from seeing the governor who was on our neck
to see us prior to his second term election. Pathetic.
The government promised to immortalise the four
student union leaders that was killed in the accident.
Up to this moment, nothing of such has happened.
These comrades lost their lives to get the governor re-
elected. And this is what has happened to their
colleagues they left in the struggle for the
emancipation of the Nigerian student. Some of the
survivors still need necessary medical attention as
some have mental cases to deal with and some
permanently disabled as there were no further effort
to get them back on their feet.
It is absurd that a government could make a promise
and renege on it. It would have been a different case
had it been the trip was not at the instance of the
government. We have to ask ourselves what will our
government do to a citizen in distress even when not
connected to the government.
OUR DEMANDS.
That government fulfills her promises.
That our slain Comrades be immortalized by the state
governor has he promised.
That July 13 every year is used to celebrate our heroes.
That government set in place motions to empower the
survivors of the accident as some of them cant do any
work that will be need great strength.
That the government help with the speedy conclusion
of the academic processes of the victims whose mates
have graduated by now.
That government investigates the molestation of
Comr. Owonola Abiodun on 30th January, 2014 at the
commissioning of the State Primary Health Board in
Akure, Ondo state when he made an attempt to seek
an audience with the governor.
May it be brought to the notice of the government that
we resort to this medium to voice our grievance
because were frustrated with government
procrastination tactics. We will however plead that
government take this as a serious issue before it is too
late. Thanks.
God bless NANS.
God bless Ondo State.
God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria."
Signed.
Comrade Olawande Ajayi,
Zonal Treasurer NANS.

Must have Thunderbird to Outlook conversion tool
Must have Thunderbird to Outlook conversion tool
I recently decided to convert my Thunderbird email to Outlook and didnt have a lot of luck finding a tool that actually worked. Maybe its because I have a pretty complex Thunderbird configuration with emails dating back to my first messages I sent/received using Netscape Mail (remember that from the 1990s?) .
I came across a tool that was a perfect fit what I needed: Aid4Mail Professional by Fookes Software. It seemed too good to be true but it actually worked! Aid4Mail was relatively quick and I ended up with a .pst file that I could use in Outlook. What I appreciated just as much as the software was the service. I ended up needing some extra help and Julian was very prompt in his replies.
If youre going to buy it, pay the $20 extra and get the 1-year license rather than the 1-time use license. My decision to purchase the latter was part of why I had to bug Julian several times but he ended up geting me out of the bind I was in. Im probably going to need to acquire another license (1 year this time!) because I still have some work to do but at least I now know what tool to use for this purpose.
Definitely a tool worth checking out if youre one of the prideful few like myself who is still using Thunderbird or any of the other old-school email clients that Aid4Mail supports (i.e. Windows Mail, Apple Mail, Eudora, Pegasus, etc).

Moon and Earth to Scale
Moon and Earth to Scale
The average distance between Earth and Moon is approximately 30 times Earths diameter.
If you could fly to the Moon at a constant speed of 1000 kilometers per hour, which is the speed of a fast passenger jet, it would take sixteen days to get there. Apollo astronauts reached the Moon in less than four days even though they coasted "uphill" almost the entire distance. They got a fast start.
The Sun happens to be 400 times the Moons diameter, and 400 times as far away. That coincidence means the Sun and Moon appear to be the same size when viewed from Earth. A total solar eclipse, in which the Moon is between the Earth and Sun, blocks the bright light from the Suns photosphere, allowing us to see the faint glow from the corona, the Suns outer atmosphere. When the Moon is at apogee, it is 11% farther from Earth than it is at perigee. This is far enough that it cannot entirely block the bright light, so eclipses which occur near apogee are not total. Gravitational interaction (tides on the Earth caused by the Moon) transfers kinetic energy from Earth to the Moon, slowing Earths rotation and raising the Moons orbit, currently at a rate of 3.8 centimeters per year.
The Moon has approximately 1/4 Earths diameter, 1/50 Earths volume, and 1/80 Earths mass. Earth is very dense overall (it is the densest planet in the Solar System), but the Moon is light for its size. The difference is partly because Earth has a large core of iron and other heavy metallic elements, while the Moon has only a small core, if it has a core at all. The Moons surface gravity is 1/6 of Earths, and escape velocity from the surface is about 1/5 of Earths.| Earth | Moon | |
| Mean diameter | 12,742 km | 3,476 km |

My Trip to Japan!
My Trip to Japan!
At Tokyo Disneyland
Eitoku High School in Nagoya, where we spent most of our exchange.
This is the day we flew out of NZ. Basically, the whole day was taken up by the flight. We left Auckland at 9am-ish and got to Tokyo at 4pm-ish their time. I suppose youll be interested in the movies I watched - Pitch Perfect which was actually really awesome, The Perks of Being a Wallflower which is now my second favourite movie of the year, Lawless which was okay but Jessica Chastain omg, and I rewatched Looper coz the person next to me was watching it and I couldnt resist seeing it again. Anyway, when we got to Tokyo our flight was running behind schedule and we had so little time to get from the international flight to our connecting flight between Tokyo and Nagoya. Luckily, a little lady working at Narita Airport ran us through the airport, giving us top priority at customs and stuff, and while our connecting flight was delayed, we got on the plane all in one piece. We arrived at Eitoku High School at around 9pm-ish, met our host families and went to their houses. As you can imagine, I hit the hay as soon as I got home.
My Japanese style room. Good lord I made such a mess of things.
I woke up rather sick that morning so I didnt have a very comfortable day but I still had loads of fun. We went and attended Eitoku High School and I was overwhelmed by how friendly the people were. We were like celebrities there. We had a couple of classes and then went out for lunch at Dennys of all places (it was Japanese style food, though) and then went to the Toyota Museum, which was pretty cool but it didnt have an Aston Martin there, so sadface. By the end of the day we were all pretty tired, and when I went back to my home I was still feeling really sick so I couldnt eat much. Blerg.
So bad.
Us with all of our homestays and our teacher Matua Les.
We basically stayed at Eitoku all day, attending classes and what not. I tried to do some Japanese Calligraphy but man that was hard. I wrote movie on my board. At the end of the day we had this party where we were only expecting a few people, but then like, 100 people were in this room and every single one of them wanted to talk to us. As you can imagine, that was rather exhausting. As the day came to an end, I sat in bed watching the Oscar nominations because they were at the better time of 10.30pm in Japan rather than 2.30am in NZ. I really dont want to even talk about dem Oscar nominations.
Eating lunch in our homeroom.
The dance club we joined in with.
This was the last proper day at Eitoku High School, and we had four English classes. The first one translated our names. Mine meant beautiful (hahahaha), loved by everyone and queen. In the second one we went around the tables and they told us things about Japanese culture. The next class read us stories in English. The last class asked us questions and stuff. We went and attempted to make some pottery (the guide did practically all mine for me though). As we got back to school and had nothing to do, we went for another look around the clubs, which students do after school until 6pm. Most of them were sports, and we even joined in on a dance class. That was fun. That night we had this insanely nice desert, which was kind of like a strawberry meringue. I want another one.
On the Nagoya TV Tower.
In Nagoya at night.
At the dinner party.
All us Dannevirke students went to the Ninja Museum, which was so cool. I want to become a Ninja now. Then we got back into Nagoya, went up the TV tower and went back to this flash as hotel. We had no clue that we werent going home before this flash dinner party that night so we were in our casuals from our touristy stuff wed been doing, while everyone else was dressed nicely. Luckily I had a nice jacket to hide the fact that I was dressed poorly. Anyway, after that dinner party which also required speeches, my host family took me to Nagoya Station where we went 15 stories up and saw Nagoya at night. It was so beautiful, but my camera couldnt capture it because a) the reflective glass hated me and b) my battery ran out. Afterwards we went for some chocolatey stuff at a cafe which was packed (weird thing when you live in Dannevirke) and went home. That was a tiring day.
Me and Anna (my homestay) at Nagoya Castle
This was our day with our individual host families, so I travelled with my family for a little while to go to a Shrine. That was really interesting. After that we went to a Sushi bar for lunch, that was probably my least favourite Japanese food experience. We went to the Nagoya Castle, which was amazing. Then we went out for tea for fried chicken. That was a really full on day, I pretty much passed out after I got home.
The crazy entertainment complex.
Me and Cassie being cute with these interesting hats.
Us and our homestays at Nagoya Station.
This was a public holiday in Japan, so our host siblings took us out to this insane entertainment complex where infants gambled and people smoked and our minds were blown as soon as we walked in. We got into a fight with our hosts as they insisted that they would pay for our lunch even though we wanted to. They eventually relented. After trying a billion times to win stuff, we left and went shopping in Nagoya. It was so weird, they had a girls mall and a boys mall separate from each other. Japanese style is so cool but man are their clothes small. That night was filled with some sadness as it was my last night with my host family and we just sat around watching the news, seeing the huge snowstorm in Tokyo and the Golden Globes stuff.
My host family
Miss you Anna!
Last day :(
We had to say goodbye to our host families today and I never anticipated how hard that was going to be. There were any tears shed. They were just the nicest people Ive ever spent 7 days with. Not much else happened in this day as we just had our connecting flight between Nagoya and Tokyo. In Tokyo there was still a lot of snow around from the snowstorm the day before, and it was a little colder than Nagoya too. Our hotel was right by the airport, so it really wasnt in the best place for trying to get into the city. Luckily, that night we went on the net and sorted out our transportation and stuff.
Lost in Translation, baby.
Tommy Lee Jones is everywhere!
The Dark Knight Rises in Japan, so yes I had to take a photo of it.
Matua Les, Keiran, me, Cassie and Jaycob at Shibuya Crossing.
The Skytree.
The view from the Skytree.
We took a very long train ride into Shibuya, which is probably the centre of every happening thing in Tokyo. As we got there in the morning, it was a little disappointing looking. We had some Starbucks and then some McDonalds, and went shopping. After a while we went to Harajuku, which had some very interesting shops which were a little better than what we found in Tokyo. To be honest, I think Melbournes a better city than Tokyo, but given the chance to go back for a few more weeks, Id really embrace Tokyo. At night, things got better as Shibuya was all lit up and magical, just like in Lost in Translation. We went up in the Tokyo Skytree, which was about 450-ish metres up. That was amazing. Probably one of my favourite experiences in Japan. There was a Ghibli shop outside of the Skytree so I literally spent about $100 NZD without even thinking. Totoros everywhere!
That time One Direction followed in our footsteps.
Us and my girl Jessie.
OMG, these guys were crazy. They kept telling us to find the Old Zealand. I want their jobs.
So pretty.
It was like Meet Me in St Louis
So this was the day when we went to Tokyo Disneyland. Theres so much I could write here but I cant even put into words how amazing that experience was. Thats the happiest place on Earth. First though, I mmust share an insane story. We went to the airport to catch our bus, so I went to the ATM to get some cash out. I saw a few teenage girls walk past with One Direction stuff. I didnt think much of it. I looked around and I saw a sea of One Direction fans waiting outside of arrivals. Yup, what are the odds that we arrive at the airport and One Direction were coming? However, we had to go to Disneyland and they were coming later, so we werent going to waste our precious Disneyland time for a band none of us particularly loved. We took some photos of the fans, and then they wanted us to take photos with them. LOL. Anyway, just check out the photos at Disneyland, they speak a million words.
Friday 18th January
The day where we ended our journey and flew back to dumb, depressing NZ (that may sound like an overstatement but NZ is actually such a stupid country compared to Japan, who may not have the most grass but theyre so logical). On the plane I saw Beasts of the Southern Wild, which was average and End of Watch, which was amazing. I didnt realise how sad that movie was going to be.
Anyway, going to Japan was an amazing experience. Id love to go there again - even live there - but spending that much money on a place Ive already been to may not be an option in the future. The scope of the amazingness is something that you could never put a price on. The trip literally changed my life and my perspective on everything, which is especially helpful considering Im embarking on the biggest year of my life as head girl. The students at Eitoku were so passionate and committed to what they do, something which NZ teens so sorely lack. The people in Japan are so kind - at Narita Airport, there were smiles everywhere, and people were genuinely happy to help. Get to Auckland Airport, there were no smiles to be seen anywhere. Im not exaggerating. Stuff you Tall Poppy Syndrome for making our country so bad. This was really the best experience Ive had in my short life so far, and it has made me excited to travel some more. India is hopefully next on my list - I just want to be a professional traveller now!

My trip to the 2014 ISC 2 Congress
My trip to the 2014 ISC 2 Congress
Last week I had the opportunity to attend the ISC2 Congress in Atlanta. It was held in conjunction with that physical security organization. When I arrived to walk the show floor, it was nothing but physical security vendors - as far as the eye could see. After about 45 minutes (sans program guide), I discovered where the information security vendors where. There were about five of them and they were tucked away in the back off the beaten path.
That wasnt what I was expecting.
Then I thought, this isnt why I came to the show anyway. Sure, its good to hear what the booth babes are waxing poetic about, and see the latest tech in action, but its usually better to hear what other experts are saying in their presentations - thats how we learn the most, anyway. One presentation stood out - way out. It was Winn Schwartaus irreverent take on security awareness: "How to Make a Security Awareness Program Fail". Ive had my strong opinions on that subject for years now and his thoughts/ideas helped solidify them. [Good to know Winn!]
If youve never seen this man present, you must. Winn made me - and the audience - laugh literally every 30 seconds for the entire presentation. It was the best IT/security related presentation Ive ever seen...not too serious, not too unprofessional and not starting every sentence with "So..." (youve heard/seen the cussing and beer drinking at some of the shows in our field). It was perfectly delivered and I learned a ton. Most importantly I decided that I want to be as entertaining and informative a speaker as Winn when I grow up!
All in all, ISC2 Congress is a worthy show if you ever have a chance to attend in the future.

My Movie Biography 2011 and How I Came to Love Jessica Chastain
My Movie Biography 2011 and How I Came to Love Jessica Chastain

(2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010) 2011. The bestest year ever. Well, in my life so far, but it is not like I have that many years to compare it to. It is kinda hard to write about a year so close to this one, but lemme tell ya, tomorrow is going to be even harder. Anyway, hope youre enjoying the series, and mark your calendars for Sunday. Big things are going to be happening!
- I went down to Wellington for a week with my best bud. It was fun. We went to the cinemas like, four times. I usually never go to the cinemas more than three times on my holidays (I know it is really bad, but hey, Im in a big city, so how can I refuse that?) We went and saw Tron: Legacy (which we didnt really like), The Social Network (because somehow it was still in cinemas), Morning Glory and Unstoppable. It was so fun!
- One of the worst experiences Ive ever had was watching Eat Pray Love when it was excruciatingly hot. That movie is by no means short. And it just does not stop. Ever. Okay it does, but it literally felt like Id missed Christmas by the time it ended.
- I get very nostalgic over that summer because I spent the entire thing to the tunes of The Social Networks soundtrack. Sometimes I just listen to Painted Sun in Abstract and it takes me back to those happy times. And then I look outside and it has just started hailing for the fifth time (we are supposed to be in spring).
- That awards season was crazy. It was the first year I really got into it, even managing to watch all of the Best Picture nominees before the show. My love for certain movies changed so much during this awards season. First of all, I kinda resented The Social Network for being more popular than Inception. But what did I really expect? I thought that The Social Network was just gonna sail through and win everything. Then The Kings Speech won the PGA. Everyone was now like "The Kings Speech for Best Picture!" So I promptly realised that Inception wasnt going to win anything, I went and saw The Kings Speech and thought it was pretty average, and then I became team The Social Network. From there on I became the biggest raging The Social Network fan on the planet. Every time I heard The Kings Speech mentioned, I would fake gagging reflexes. I knew it was well over when The Kings Speech won the SAG, but I refused to let go of the hope that The Social Network might take that award home. My friends and I gathered around the TV and watched The Kings Speech win Best Picture. I may have cried.
Those Oscars tore apart my life, man. Which I realise is pretty silly considering everyone in the blogging world hates the Oscars (seriously, theyre still my favourite part of the year). Now I can tolerate The Kings Speech, even though I still feel those twangs of pain whenever I hear it mentioned. As I said last night, I still cant decide between Inception and The Social Network being my favourite film of 2010. Ah, to look at things with a clear head...
- March was a shitty mcshitfest of a month. But I saw The Ghost Writer. I dont know why this is special, but I always get nostalgic over watching this movie. Olivia Williams performance is still my favourite of 2010.
- I had the worst cinema experience of my life at the start of June. I went to go and see X-Men: First Class. That was nice enough. I just wanted to go and gaze at Michael Fassbender for two hours. Alas, I had a guy sitting next to me who Im fairly sure was insane. He talked the entire time. Not to anyone else, but to himself. All about "1 oclock" and "sandwiches". The entire time. Then he got up to go to the toilet, and he just about broke my toe and kicked my friends popcorn. I cant even process how strange this experience was.
- I got my tonsils out that month, too. Which was peachy. The day before we had Stage Challenge, which our school came second in. That all ended at around 11pm, so I had to kinda rush and get some McDonalds as I wasnt allowed to eat past 12am. Then I had to get up at 6am and enjoy those last moments of having a normal throat. The tonsils came out, and I had to go in the childrens ward because I was 15 and you had to be 16 to be an adult. I got a lollipop. Im gonna miss going to that ward. Anyways, I got to go home and stay there for two weeks (I wasnt allowed to go outside for a large portion of that), which was nice because people came and visited and I got to watch a lot of movies. The only ones I really remember watching were There Will Be Blood, Fish Tank and Season of the Witch. But there were a lot. In that time I also won the LAMMY for Best New Lamb, which was right surprising. I did a lot of screaming, which made my throat even worse.
- During this tonsillectomy recovery I almost died. Okay, thats an exaggeration, but that night was hell. It was a Tuesday night, so Id had Tuesday Movie Night (Tamara Drewe, Gnomeo & Juliet and The Last Exorcism were the films on tap...such a weird triple feature). Then I proceeded to go to bed, but my throat was hurting too much. So I took some codiene. I took it on an empty stomach, which was the STUPIDEST THING IVE EVER DONE. Two hours later I got the WORST stomach pains in the world, and they did not give up for the rest of that night. I literally just sat outside, in the freezing cold, crying because I was in so much pain. It was horrid.
- I stuffed up my reviewing gig with the paper. To be honest, my reviews were getting to long and fancy for that paper. But I look back on that and realise how stupid I was. People still remember those reviews like they were yesterday, though, which is weird.
- I saw Blue Valentine. It was glorious. I cried so much.
- My 22 year old horse Sox had to get put down. I remember the day that my Dad rung me and told me that it had to be done. I had come home from school and watched the part of Schindlers List that I missed at school. So I was already feeling pretty depressed. Then he rung me and I knew what he was going to say before he even said it, and I cried for that entire afternoon. The next morning he was put down, and I watched The Devil Wears Prada to make me feel better. Unfortunately, nothing could comfort me at that point.
- Speaking of Schindlers List, I became really interested (I really dont know how to put this) in the Holocaust. Which lead me to Night and Fog, which is hands down the scariest, most affecting film Ive ever seen. Through this, I started valuing my life a whole lot more and thinking about how I can make the most out of my time here. Im not an overly philosophical person, but I think I really changed for the better at this point, and I hope that I can always be the best person I can be. Okay, philosophical muse over.
- If you feel the need to know ever more about me, heres my 16 Days of Birthday marathon.
- It snowed in Dannevirke. That was so exciting.
- Oh yeah, I had my big obsession with Ralph Fiennes! Which stemmed from Schindlers List which makes me feel really bad, but yeah, that guy is awesome. It led me to Quiz Show and Strange Days, which were both awesome films that I probably would have missed out on otherwise.
- I finally turned 16 which meant I could watch R16 movies legally! The first R16 movie I legally got out/watched was In Bruges, which I saw on my brand new Blu-Ray player.
- I saw the strangest double-feature at the cinemas: Crazy Stupid Love, followed by The Tree of Life. I felt so cool going to see The Tree of Life. I actually said at the counter that I was so excited for it because I would finally get to see who this Jessica Chastain person was. Since the 26th of August, I have been in love with her.
- A week later I saw Melancholia at the New Zealand Film Festival, which was exciting because it was my first festival movie. That ending was the most epic experience Ive ever had in cinemas. Afterwards I just felt so depressed. I actually just spotted my mother in a bookstore buying a Lotto ticket and I just gave her this huge hug. And then I vowed that I was going to take it easy on the Lars von Trier films.
- I wrote that essay on film piracy. It took a lot of researching, a lot of raspberry iced teas and a whole lot of French films (Saturdays were my foreign film nights for a while, so they provided a break). It got an excellence, which I was hoping for. Then, during study leave I decided I wanted to post it on my blog since it was either write a blog post or watch Schindlers List again. A month later I got a call from Paramount about it. It kinda strikes me as a little strange, now...
- We got our little dog, Indy! I think the first movie we watched together was Bridesmaids. Which I suppose makes me an irresponsible parent.
- My maths exam was the worst thing ever. For one thing, I was doing a whole level above where I was at. For another thing, that exam was so hard that our maths teacher said that not even the highest level could do it. I felt so depressed afterwards, so I just went home and watched Scott Pilgrim vs the World. It made me infinitely happy.
- I discovered the awesomeness of Sofia Coppola! I kinda watched her films in backwards order, though: Marie Antoinette, Somewhere, Lost in Translation then The Virgin Suicides.
- Tyler introduced me to the magic of Krzysztof Kieslowski. Im forever grateful for that.
- I watched Senna, not having a clue about Formula One or Ayrton Senna, and ended up as this huge bawling mess afterwards. I was so surprised at how that movie turned out.
- I watched all of the Harry Potter movies within six days. That was actually quite fun. I wish I had hopped on that train a long time before then.
- Guess what I did on my New Years Eve? Watched Inception. And guess what Ill probably do this New Years Eve? Watch Inception. Or maybe Ill change it to The Dark Knight Rises. Who knows...?

Monsanto v Cefetra EU Court of Justice Limits Scope of Patent Protection Available to Gene Sequences
Monsanto v Cefetra EU Court of Justice Limits Scope of Patent Protection Available to Gene Sequences
A couple of years ago I posted an article (available here) discussing the case of Monsanto v. Cefetra. Essentially, in that case a European court held that Monsanto patents claiming the gene responsible for its Roundup Ready trait were not infringed by the importation of soy meal containing the gene, because the grinding of the soybeans to make the meal rendered the DNA incapable of expressing the encoded protein, and thus unprotectable pursuant to the 1998 European Union Directive on biotechnology.
On Tuesday, July 6, that decision was affirmed by the Court of Justice of the European Union. This is the highest judicial body of the European Union, so there will be no further appeals, and this would appear to be the final word on the subject. The decision was reported in an article posted on IPKat, a respected European IP blog, available here. I am no expert on European law, but here are a few thoughts on the significance of this case.
First, my interpretation of the decision.
In a nutshell, the Court of Justice held that although the so-called Biotech Directive, promulgated by the European Union in 1998, permits the patenting of naturally occurring DNA sequences, the scope of patent protection only extends to products incorporating the DNA if the DNA is capable of performing the function for which it was patented." Applying this criterion to the facts of the case, the Court held that the patentable function of the gene at issue was to confer glyphosate (i.e., RoundUp) resistance upon a plant, and that since the soy meal is dead and thus incapable of expressing this function, the DNA residing in the soy meal is ineligible for patent protection.
The Court went on to hold that the Biotech Directive supersedes national law, and precludes individual European nations from enacting legislation that would permit patenting of DNA sequence per se. It also held that the prohibition against patenting DNA sequences per se applies retroactively to patents predating the EUs adoption of Directive in 1998. In short, this unappealable ruling appears to be binding upon all 27 European Union Member States, and all DNA patents, no matter when they were issued.
The ruling could have a substantial impact on biotechnology. Obviously, it provides an opening for growers to circumvent gene patents used to protect genetically modified crops by growing the crops in a country where the gene is not patented, such as Argentina in this case, or in a jurisdiction with weak patent enforcement, and then importing the product into a European Union member wherein the patent is in force with impunity.
According to the logic of the decision, if viable seeds were imported, they would likely be found infringing because the DNA would still be capable of performing the function for which it was patented. But if the product has been processed, and as a result no longer viable, as exemplified by the soy meal at issue in this case, importation should not be found to constitute infringement.
The ruling could also have implications for the scope of protection afforded by gene patents for genetic diagnostic testing. Genetic diagnostic testing, such as by DNA sequencing, typically involves the isolation and/or amplification of the gene sequence being tested. This isolation and amplification might be characterized as the manufacture of the DNA, which could constitute infringement of a patent claiming the DNA sequence. For example, the ACLU challenge to Myriads BRCA gene patents is based in part on an assumption that the patent claims reciting isolated BRCA sequences would be infringed by unauthorized testing for mutations in the BRCA genes (which typically involves DNA sequencing).
However, this assumption is premised on the patents covering the isolated DNA sequences per se. But arguably, the isolated and amplified DNA fragments generated in the course of DNA sequencing and testing are not capable of performing their function, and thus after this weeks Court of Justice decision are ineligible for patent coverage in the European Union.
Of course, this would depend upon how one defines the "function of the patented gene. For example, one might argue that one important function of BRCA sequences claimed in Myriads patents is for diagnostic testing, and hence isolated DNA sequences generated in the course of genetic testing are performing a function for which they are patented
However, under a more restrictive view the function of the BRCA genetic sequences is to code for the BRCA protein product, i.e., the actual physiological function of the BRCA gene in the human body. Myriads patents specifically discuss use of the isolated BRCA gene for production of the BRCA protein in a recombinant cell, which could be a useful research tool in drug discovery. As discussed in earlier posts relating to the ACLU lawsuit, I point out that in practice BRCA testing does not involve the amplification of the full length BRCA coding sequence, but only amplicons representing fragments of the gene. These fragments would not be capable of achieving the function of expressing the full-length protein, and thus arguably lack the requisite functional potential.
I think reasonable minds could go either way on the issue, but given the current level of antipathy towards the use of gene patents to block genetic diagnostic testing, I can envision a European court adopting a restrictive interpretation of what it means for a genetic sequence to be capable of performing its patentable function, and decide that gene patent coverage does not extend to use of the genetic sequence in diagnostic testing.
In a related context, the Courts decision could have implications for the effect of gene patents on whole genome sequencing. There is much buzz these days regarding the imminent arrival of personal whole genome sequencing, which will permit individuals to have their entire genome sequenced for a relatively small amount of money. Some have worried that a thicket of gene patents might impede the ability of firms to provide whole genome sequencing. However, DNA manufactured in the course of whole genome sequencing is unlikely to be found capable of performing the function of individual patented genetic sequences residing therein, in which case genome sequencing would not result in patent infringement liability in Europe.
I personally do not think gene patents will substantially impede whole genome sequencing, in the US or elsewhere. But if I am wrong, and patents on genes pose a substantial impediment to whole genome sequencing in the US, the patents could be circumvented by exporting the process to a place like Europe. The EU court decision could substantially reduce the likelihood that whole genome sequencing in Europe will result in liability for patent infringement.
On the other hand, the ruling should not affect the ability of biotechnology companies to use gene patents to protect their biologic drugs. In this context, the patented gene is performing its primary function of expressing the protein encoded by the gene, and thus satisfies the criterion established by Tuesdays decision of the Court of Justice.

My return to this blog
My return to this blog
So I always have had this notion that someday Id come back to Hawaii for good. And when I do I would re-animate this blog and continue the story of my island life.
What I did not expect was that I would be joining the cast of Hawaii Five-0 and thus I would find myself back here sooner than I anticipated.
So here goes...
I admit that Further Dispatches has kind of gone ignored since I started using Twitter and Instagram but were going to see if the setting and the downtime while Im still island bound may inspire longer pieces here.
And to kick it off with a lot posts for August I decided to do a new 30 day drawing challenge. Found this one on the internet looked like fun.
Alright onward.

My Response to Whitechapels Critics
My Response to Whitechapels Critics
Whitechapel: The Final Stand of Sherlock Holmes was published in June 2011, approximately two years after it was finished. The book was a whirlwind of activity. Id spent over a year researching the Jack the Ripper crimes and psychological profiles of various serial killers, trying to build a version in my mind of a person who could do such horrible things. I spent an equal amount of time deciphering the many annotated guides to Sherlock Holmes, encyclopedias, and studies about events that occurred in Doyles canon and those that occurred in real history at that same time.
Then, most amazingly, Bill Thompson accepted editorial duties on the book. Id first read about Bill in Stephen Kings On Writing, and to me, there could be no finer person to work with and learn from. During those several months I was apprenticed to Bill, I learned more about the craft than I had from a lifetime of writing. More importantly, he was the first person to ever call me an "Author." Not a writer, not a person who wants to write a book someday, not a cop with a novel inside of him, but an author.
And that is what I became.
Since Whitechapel, Ive published over thirty-five titles, including novels, short story collections, and various anthologies for charity. My career has led me to friendship with Harlan Ellison and others who I only once dreamed of even getting signatures from.
However, there is something significant about your first time. And for every person who finds Whitechapel and loves it, there is another who is shocked and angered by what they read. Most amusing is when they say, "If Id believed the reviews" or "If Id paid attention to the warnings."
Well, I didnt put them all over the product page for decoration, sweetiecakes.
Im the guy at the front gate of the Grand Guignol saying, "Are you sure you want to do this? Didnt you look at the posters?"
For Whitechapel to be written, I had to confront some terrifyingly dark realities about not just myself but the world and humanity. I suspect that the people whove left some of the more colorful reviews felt the same way, but instead of facing up to it, ran here and cried.
Over the years, Ive certainly changed as an author and I dont know that I would be capable of writing Whitechapel again. Ive said that before. Not in terms of quality, but in terms of being willing to be so brutal on the reader.
I realize that Whitechapel is hard on most ordinary people. I get it. Its probably especially hard on those who ignore the warnings and think its simply another Sherlock Holmes story and ACD knockoff. I want to assure you right now that it is not.
For better or for worse, this is the cast and crew of Sherlock Holmes if they lived in this reality. Not your reality, not my reality, not even real reality (if you can catch my drift on that one...) but in the reality of this book.
If you are looking for more traditional pastiches or reiterations of the original, I will be happy to make you several suggestions of books I thoroughly enjoyed. Whitechapel was never intended to be that, and if it is viewed as such, will thoroughly disappoint.
As for my own review of the book, what can I say? Its my first go. Im terrifically proud of some of it and wincing at what Id have done differently at other parts. Thats how any book or performance goes. To return to the original manuscript and change it to meet my standards today would be dishonest and do a disservice to that young, hungry, naive author who wrote it.
And I wouldnt piss that guy off, because according to some of you, hes a real monster.

Mommy I am afraid to die
Mommy I am afraid to die

As we all have experienced, almost every day of parenting brings unexpected new challenges. Surprisingly, some of these challenges can be creatively approached through math. For example, what do you tell your seven year old son when he comes crying to your bed and tells you that he is afraid to die? I was uncomfortably puzzled for a moment or two. Then I thought of the low life expectancy facing our ancestors hundreds of years ago and how gradually it started improving with the discovery of vaccines and cures for some of the deadliest diseases.
It seems that each new generation adds about 10 years to the previous generations life expectancy, creating a chain of numbers that represent an arithmetical progression. Each life expectancy differs from the previous one by the same amount. I described to my son the most optimistic arithmetical progression I could imagine. I told him how his great grandparents had an average life expectancy of 70, grandparents around 80, me and dad can hope for 90, and he can expect 100.
Going even further, I added that while he is enjoying these long 90+ years, he can come up with an invention to make himself eternal. And the latter may include populating another planet to get food and living space for everyone. This detour worked wonders as he fell asleep in 5 minutes, probably fantasizing himself on a mission to Jupiter. Hopefully he will remember what the arithmetic progression is when the morning comes.
