My Movie Biography Extreme Obsessions and My Favourite Directors in 2007

My Movie Biography Extreme Obsessions and My Favourite Directors in 2007

So after telling (some of you) all about 2006, Ill move onto 2007 as we edge closer to my third blog birthday. Hopefully you enjoy this entry...

2007 was definitely a blossoming year for movies and I. Here are the most exciting things that happened:

  • After going through that rough patch with Jake and Heath, I fell in love with Daniel Craig, all because that poster of Casino Royale was pretty hot. Once I was helping out at a horse show, and when I got bored I would get cinema showing times texted to me because they had Casino Royale in them. I mean, that was true love. I didnt see Casino Royale until three months after, but I did love it. I even bought the book, just because it had Daniel Craig on the front.
  • I bought my first Empire magazine issue. It had Lord of the Rings on the front. I read that issue five hundred times. It is just about in tatters. Now I have over five years worth of issues of the magazine.
  • I saw my first R16. Alfred Hitchcocks Psycho. I used to be the biggest advocate for not watching movies underage. People would tell me about how they watched R16s and then Id give them a huge lecture about how they shouldnt have watched those movies because they were too young and that is against the law. Had my mother not insisted that we watch Psycho, then I probably wouldnt have seen any R16s until I was 16.
  • I really loved that film, though. She showed me The Birds, and I loved that one just the same. Alfred Hitchcock became my first favourite director.
  • Even though I am dipping my toes in horror this month, when I was 11, I used to be a huge horror fan. I saw Carrie, and it became my favourite film. Okay, it was more of an obsession. I saw it one Wednesday night, and after that, I would not stop talking about it. I had to know every piece of trivia, I had to read the book, I watched some of the scenes over and over again on YouTube when my parents werent home. I even did an entire speech on Sissy Spacek, even though I had only seen Carrie and Coal Miners Daughter. It was a pretty exciting speech. I got into my first school speech final. Ever since then, Ive been in every school speech final. It took me until 2010 to win one, and then I managed to get the speech prize again last year (but there wasnt a final...just a prize for whoever had the best speech). In a way, Sissy Spacek harboured my need to be awesome at speeches every single year.
  • Another horror that I loved in 2007 was The Ring (the remake). I had it on videotape (oh the irony), and I watched parts of the movie every morning before school for weeks.
  • In this year, I became convinced that I needed to make a DVD collection. I would save up my pocket money, and Id be all ready to buy some ex-rentals from the shop, but Dad said that I could just "get them out when I wanted for free". So I didnt get any. For my birthday, however, Dad bought me The Devil Wears Prada on ex-rental, and I watched it over and over and over again. Words cannot explain how much I love that film. But I used to hate it when Andy started prioritising her career over her boyfriend, so I would always skip that part. Basically, I would watch it mainly for the clothes, and then Id try and buy the same clothes from the Warehouse. That didnt go according to plan.
  • I saw Mean Girls at some point through this year. I videotaped it off the TV (my main method of watching movies back in the day). That tape had the first few minutes cut out, so while I watched the film billions of times, it wasnt until when I bought the DVD that I saw those first few minutes. Even now they still seem really foreign.
  • I started my job at Blockbuster in 2007. I felt so cool. I didnt get paid though. CHILD LABOUR!
  • Another obsession I had in 2007 (jeez, there were so many) was with Grace Kelly. Which of course introduced me to more Hitchcock films, which legitimately meant that I could call him my favourite director. But yes, Grace Kelly lived an interesting life...which I know because I read three different biographies on her.
  • Probably the biggest obsession I had in 2007 was with Hairspray. When I say I was obsessed, I was OBSESSED. I mean, I know that 2007 was considered a great year in cinema because we had films like No Country for Old Men, There Will Be Blood and Gone Baby Gone, but come on, Hairspray was actually the best. It is just so funny, lively, colourful, inspirational...the full package, really. Wanna know how obsessed I was? At work we had some thieves around the place, so we had to change over the cases to more secure cases on the new release wall. This was one of the most boring, systematic jobs ever. There were over 1000 cases to change. It took an entire week, working from early in the morning to late in the afternoon. Honestly, if I was on the payroll, I could have got at least $500 for this. But what did I ask for? A Hairspray soundtrack. Which was like, $23. Maybe I should just remind Dad about that time and get what I truly deserved...
  • The last "obsession" I had in 2007 was actually fairly embarrassing. Pulp Fiction was on TV late one night, so I taped it. I then watched it. I then became obsessed with it. The catch is that I DID NOT UNDERSTAND PULP FICTION. I watched it again in 2010, and it was like seeing a whole new film. No jokes. In fact, all I think I took from the experience was Mias overdose, Mia and Vincent dancing and Quentin Tarantinos appearance in the film. Alas, those three scenes made QT my "new favourite director". Which is really embarrassing. I did try to watch Reservoir Dogs on Christmas Eve but my mother told me to turn it off because it had too much swearing in it. So I didnt see it until 2010.
  • Alas, I did get a portable DVD player in this year. Which meant that I could watch movies filled with swearing and stuff without my parents ever finding out. But for some reason, I never finished watching Reservoir Dogs. Obviously, Quentin Tarantino was my "favourite director".
Check back tomorrow for 2008 in review. How about you, who was your first favourite director? Did you ever have extreme obsessions with movies?

My Movie Biography 2011 and How I Came to Love Jessica Chastain

My Movie Biography 2011 and How I Came to Love Jessica Chastain

(2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010) 2011. The bestest year ever. Well, in my life so far, but it is not like I have that many years to compare it to. It is kinda hard to write about a year so close to this one, but lemme tell ya, tomorrow is going to be even harder. Anyway, hope youre enjoying the series, and mark your calendars for Sunday. Big things are going to be happening!

  • I went down to Wellington for a week with my best bud. It was fun. We went to the cinemas like, four times. I usually never go to the cinemas more than three times on my holidays (I know it is really bad, but hey, Im in a big city, so how can I refuse that?) We went and saw Tron: Legacy (which we didnt really like), The Social Network (because somehow it was still in cinemas), Morning Glory and Unstoppable. It was so fun!
  • One of the worst experiences Ive ever had was watching Eat Pray Love when it was excruciatingly hot. That movie is by no means short. And it just does not stop. Ever. Okay it does, but it literally felt like Id missed Christmas by the time it ended.
  • I get very nostalgic over that summer because I spent the entire thing to the tunes of The Social Networks soundtrack. Sometimes I just listen to Painted Sun in Abstract and it takes me back to those happy times. And then I look outside and it has just started hailing for the fifth time (we are supposed to be in spring).
  • That awards season was crazy. It was the first year I really got into it, even managing to watch all of the Best Picture nominees before the show. My love for certain movies changed so much during this awards season. First of all, I kinda resented The Social Network for being more popular than Inception. But what did I really expect? I thought that The Social Network was just gonna sail through and win everything. Then The Kings Speech won the PGA. Everyone was now like "The Kings Speech for Best Picture!" So I promptly realised that Inception wasnt going to win anything, I went and saw The Kings Speech and thought it was pretty average, and then I became team The Social Network. From there on I became the biggest raging The Social Network fan on the planet. Every time I heard The Kings Speech mentioned, I would fake gagging reflexes. I knew it was well over when The Kings Speech won the SAG, but I refused to let go of the hope that The Social Network might take that award home. My friends and I gathered around the TV and watched The Kings Speech win Best Picture. I may have cried.
Those Oscars tore apart my life, man. Which I realise is pretty silly considering everyone in the blogging world hates the Oscars (seriously, theyre still my favourite part of the year). Now I can tolerate The Kings Speech, even though I still feel those twangs of pain whenever I hear it mentioned. As I said last night, I still cant decide between Inception and The Social Network being my favourite film of 2010. Ah, to look at things with a clear head...

  • March was a shitty mcshitfest of a month. But I saw The Ghost Writer. I dont know why this is special, but I always get nostalgic over watching this movie. Olivia Williams performance is still my favourite of 2010.
  • I had the worst cinema experience of my life at the start of June. I went to go and see X-Men: First Class. That was nice enough. I just wanted to go and gaze at Michael Fassbender for two hours. Alas, I had a guy sitting next to me who Im fairly sure was insane. He talked the entire time. Not to anyone else, but to himself. All about "1 oclock" and "sandwiches". The entire time. Then he got up to go to the toilet, and he just about broke my toe and kicked my friends popcorn. I cant even process how strange this experience was.
  • I got my tonsils out that month, too. Which was peachy. The day before we had Stage Challenge, which our school came second in. That all ended at around 11pm, so I had to kinda rush and get some McDonalds as I wasnt allowed to eat past 12am. Then I had to get up at 6am and enjoy those last moments of having a normal throat. The tonsils came out, and I had to go in the childrens ward because I was 15 and you had to be 16 to be an adult. I got a lollipop. Im gonna miss going to that ward. Anyways, I got to go home and stay there for two weeks (I wasnt allowed to go outside for a large portion of that), which was nice because people came and visited and I got to watch a lot of movies. The only ones I really remember watching were There Will Be Blood, Fish Tank and Season of the Witch. But there were a lot. In that time I also won the LAMMY for Best New Lamb, which was right surprising. I did a lot of screaming, which made my throat even worse.
  • During this tonsillectomy recovery I almost died. Okay, thats an exaggeration, but that night was hell. It was a Tuesday night, so Id had Tuesday Movie Night (Tamara Drewe, Gnomeo & Juliet and The Last Exorcism were the films on tap...such a weird triple feature). Then I proceeded to go to bed, but my throat was hurting too much. So I took some codiene. I took it on an empty stomach, which was the STUPIDEST THING IVE EVER DONE. Two hours later I got the WORST stomach pains in the world, and they did not give up for the rest of that night. I literally just sat outside, in the freezing cold, crying because I was in so much pain. It was horrid.
  • I stuffed up my reviewing gig with the paper. To be honest, my reviews were getting to long and fancy for that paper. But I look back on that and realise how stupid I was. People still remember those reviews like they were yesterday, though, which is weird.
  • I saw Blue Valentine. It was glorious. I cried so much.
  • My 22 year old horse Sox had to get put down. I remember the day that my Dad rung me and told me that it had to be done. I had come home from school and watched the part of Schindlers List that I missed at school. So I was already feeling pretty depressed. Then he rung me and I knew what he was going to say before he even said it, and I cried for that entire afternoon. The next morning he was put down, and I watched The Devil Wears Prada to make me feel better. Unfortunately, nothing could comfort me at that point.
  • Speaking of Schindlers List, I became really interested (I really dont know how to put this) in the Holocaust. Which lead me to Night and Fog, which is hands down the scariest, most affecting film Ive ever seen. Through this, I started valuing my life a whole lot more and thinking about how I can make the most out of my time here. Im not an overly philosophical person, but I think I really changed  for the better at this point, and I hope that I can always be the best person I can be. Okay, philosophical muse over.
  • If you feel the need to know ever more about me, heres my 16 Days of Birthday marathon.
  • It snowed in Dannevirke. That was so exciting.
  • Oh yeah, I had my big obsession with Ralph Fiennes! Which stemmed from Schindlers List which makes me feel really bad, but yeah, that guy is awesome. It led me to Quiz Show and Strange Days, which were both awesome films that I probably would have missed out on otherwise.
  • I finally turned 16 which meant I could watch R16 movies legally! The first R16 movie I legally got out/watched was In Bruges, which I saw on my brand new Blu-Ray player.
  • I saw the strangest double-feature at the cinemas: Crazy Stupid Love, followed by The Tree of Life. I felt so cool going to see The Tree of Life. I actually said at the counter that I was so excited for it because I would finally get to see who this Jessica Chastain person was. Since the 26th of August, I have been in love with her.
  • A week later I saw Melancholia at the New Zealand Film Festival, which was exciting because it was my first festival movie. That ending was the most epic experience Ive ever had in cinemas. Afterwards I just felt so depressed. I actually just spotted my mother in a bookstore buying a Lotto ticket and I just gave her this huge hug. And then I vowed that I was going to take it easy on the Lars von Trier films.
  • I wrote that essay on film piracy. It took a lot of researching, a lot of raspberry iced teas and a whole lot of French films (Saturdays were my foreign film nights for a while, so they provided a break). It got an excellence, which I was hoping for. Then, during study leave I decided I wanted to post it on my blog since it was either write a blog post or watch Schindlers List again. A month later I got a call from Paramount about it. It kinda strikes me as a little strange, now...
  • We got our little dog, Indy! I think the first movie we watched together was Bridesmaids. Which I suppose makes me an irresponsible parent.
  • My maths exam was the worst thing ever. For one thing, I was doing a whole level above where I was at. For another thing, that exam was so hard that our maths teacher said that not even the highest level could do it. I felt so depressed afterwards, so I just went home and watched Scott Pilgrim vs the World. It made me infinitely happy.
  • I discovered the awesomeness of Sofia Coppola! I kinda watched her films in backwards order, though: Marie Antoinette, Somewhere, Lost in Translation then The Virgin Suicides.
  • Tyler introduced me to the magic of Krzysztof Kieslowski. Im forever grateful for that.
  • I watched Senna, not having a clue about Formula One or Ayrton Senna, and ended up as this huge bawling mess afterwards. I was so surprised at how that movie turned out.
  • I watched all of the Harry Potter movies within six days. That was actually quite fun. I wish I had hopped on that train a long time before then.
  • Guess what I did on my New Years Eve? Watched Inception. And guess what Ill probably do this New Years Eve? Watch Inception. Or maybe Ill change it to The Dark Knight Rises. Who knows...?
Last day tomorrow! Whats one of your worst cinema experiences? How long have you been in love with Jessica Chastain?

My Movie Biography 2010 The Year of Christopher Nolan

My Movie Biography 2010 The Year of Christopher Nolan

(2006, 2007, 2008, 2009) 2010 was such a messed up year. Im not sure why, but Im pretty sure I changed my personality about 5000 times, and everyone else changed 5000 times, too. After that year, I kinda swore not to let much bother me, and just take everything a little less seriously. It seems to be working out so far. Anyway, 2010 as it was in movies:

  • I went on my first actual plane ride! I went down to Christchurch, which as you know, was left devastated by two earthquakes which occurred late in 2010 and early in 2011. It was my absolute favourite place in New Zealand, mainly because of this DVD store they had there called "Alice in Videoland". Seriously, that place was magical. There were like, all of these themed room for the DVDs. Like, the horror/sci-fi room was all dark and scary. They had so many classic DVDs. The whole place was seriously like another world...kinda like how I imagine heaven. Plus, Im pretty sure they had every DVD known to man. Yes, theres a huge difference between that DVD store and our DVD store. Unfortunately, it was damaged during the earthquake, but earlier this year it relocated and opened with an arthouse cinema. Im definitely going down there as soon as I can afford it.
  • I saw Avatar. Im sure that was supposed to be one of those life-changing things, but it really wasnt. Im no Avatar hater, but Im pretty sure I was more excited over this special Avatar cup I got at the cinemas. Sadly, that cup has disappeared.
  • Say what you want about The Hurt Locker, but Kathryn Bigelow winning that Oscar for Best Director actually changed my life. Up until that moment, I had always wanted to be an actress. But when Kathryn Bigelow won that award, I realised how few female directors there were. And I thought, "why do something everyone else is doing? Lets be a director!" I still hold on to that stupid dream now, but dont expect me to be the next Bigelow.
  • I did happen to win an Oscar that year. Okay, not a real one. I was a part of our school production and I won an "Oscar" for being the best performer in our group. Is this foreshadowing?

  • I saw An Education that year and I loved it to pieces. It kinda changed my life because Jenny is a lot like me. It is also a movie that makes me want to get up and do a lot of schoolwork. Which is what I should be doing now.
  • I once saw Up in the Air four times within a week. What can I say? I really loved that movie.
  • Pretty much all I really remember of 2010 was being obsessed with Christopher Nolan. Im not sure where this suddenly sprung from, since I had only seen The Dark Knight at that point in time. I think it was because I was beyond excited for Inception. It actually scares me how I was so excited for that movie...not even The Dark Knight Rises came close in the anticipation stakes, mainly because I would watch all three trailers every day until I got to see it. In the lead up to Inception, I watched all of Nolans films apart from Insomnia (which I got for my birthday, a month after I first saw Inception). I saw The Prestige but ended up getting really confused. I finally saw Batman Begins. I saw Memento on YouTube (in all honesty, I didnt really grasp onto it until the second time around and look, it is now my favourite movie). And yeah, I saw Following. That was interesting. Those were exciting times.
  • And yes, I did get to see Inception. Only July 22nd. I realise that my reaction to this movie was very stupid, but I cant help the fact that it was so awesome. Afterwards I was shaking and crying so much that I couldnt even hold onto a fry from Burger King. The day after, my friend and I drew up diagrams of it in maths on the whiteboard instead of doing work. There were some parts we didnt get. So yes, I went and saw it again three days later. And then I decided that Id take everyone to see it on my birthday (I paid for their tickets, too, which was $80 all up...on my birthday). If there is one movie that Id choose to see for the first time again, it would be this one. I just want that experience again. I also bought the screenplay for no particular reason, but it was very pretty.
  • Uhhhhh...I literally became the last person in NZ to see Boy, which is like our most popular film ever. Okay, I wasnt the last one. But everyone went to see it in cinemas, and I was too busy watching Inception three times (someone commented on how weird that was). I just caught it on DVD, and I was literally pressurised by everyone to give it a 10/10 rating in the paper. Yes, I liked it, but it is more of an 8/10 movie for me now.
  • Tuesday Movie Nights became a thing! In 2009 I was already getting movies out every Tuesday, but they were only the ones I really wanted to see. In 2010, I just decided to go all out. I remember my first three movie night - with Brothers, The Box and A Single Man. I only really loved A Single Man. I loved it so much that I bought it full price on DVD (it wasnt cheap), and I felt so swagtastic because I was this 15 year old girl walking around holding this arty film about suicide. I dont know why I think Im so different and cool.
  • I saw Kick-Ass and it was like, the funniest thing Id ever seen. It still kinda is. Mark Strong for life.
  • I had the hugest obsession ever with Cillian Murphy. How could you not? His eyes are like the most perfect crystal blue oceans. I saw the large majority of his movies, and I still havent recovered from seeing him with a pen in his throat in Red Eye. That was kinda...strange.
  • I had a phase with Facebook. Not with using the site, but the making of it. I think this was because The Social Network was coming out and I was so confused by the fact that David Fincher was making a movie about Facebook with the guy from Zombieland in it. So I read this book called The Accidental Billionaires, and that made me extra interested in the making of Facebook. Then I did a speech about it, which won me my first speech prize. Good times. Of course, I saw The Social Network. For the life of me, I cant choose between that movie or Inception in deciding what was the best movie of 2010.
  • Hey, I wrote this post, which I think is a forgotten gem.
  • I dressed up as Eli from Let the Right One In for Halloween. It was actually the easiest and most effective Halloween costume ever. Seriously, all I needed to do was get a white shirt and some red face paint and just drip it everywhere. So easy.
  • As for school, everything was coming to an end (again) because this was my last non-NCEA year (apart from the fact I was in an advanced maths class which meant I was doing NCEA papers). As a year ten, I got to go on camp, where we went down to the Abel Tasman National Park (basically a crapload of beaches) and it was so fun. Seriously the highlight of my school career. Then at prizegiving, I managed to top three classes: English, which I have topped for the past three years; Social Studies, which I wasnt quite expecting; and Art, which was awkward because I wasnt taking the class in 2011. I am taking it again this year (the photography course), and it is exciting because Im headed for a Merit with my portfolio. Maybe art is my thing.
  • As for the blog, it started becoming popular. Like, people were commenting. I was featured on links posts. It was so exciting. The funniest thing was when I was on an episode of the LAMBcast. I decided I may as well give it a go, despite the fact that I had no headset and I was very new to the concept of podcasting. I think the other podcasters were Dylan, Nick, Steve, Kai and Ryan, and I talked about Cemetery Junction. It was funny because they had no idea how old I was, and when I just casually mentioned that I started my blog when I was 14, they were all just like "WTF?" Okay, those werent their words but the atmosphere got a little funny after that. I didnt actually realise until then that it was pretty unnatural to have a blog at my age.
  • I spent my New Years Eve watching Inception and trying to make it finish right on 12am. Because Im the coolest person I know.
Man, 2010 was not that interesting. Have you ever been abnormally excited for a movie? Whats your favourite Nicolas Cage hairstyle?

My Movie Biography Paul Newman Leonardo DiCaprio and Changes in 2009

My Movie Biography Paul Newman Leonardo DiCaprio and Changes in 2009

(2006, 2007, 2008) Wow, 2009. Seems like just yesterday that 2009 happened. Im not kidding. I blame this on high school. High school is so short that everything goes really fast. Sometimes I feel like I started just yesterday, but then I realise that Im one year out from finishing. It is quite scary. Anyway, 2009:

  • The first day of 2009 was extremely good. Why? Because I saw Cat on a Hot Tin Roof for the first time. And that introduced me to the hotness that was Paul Newman. Now, I was really sad when he died in 2008, but at that point, I wasnt really aware of who he was. When I saw Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, I literally saw the most perfect looking man who ever lived. Not to mention that his performance is this huge melting pot of angst, masculinity on the edge and a general distaste in living. The way he reacts with Maggie is so fascinating to watch. You know how those Tumblr people like to say that a certain good looking person made their "ovaries explode"? I know it is a bit extreme, and I dont think it really happened, but thats exactly how I felt when I saw Paul Newman in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Needless to say, I was in love with him for most of that year. Even so much so that my mother went halves with me on this Paul Newman boxset...which to this day Ive only watched two out of the five films. I should really get going on the rest.
  • Ah yeah, high school happened. I honestly dont remember too much of the early days, although I soon realised that high school was better than primary. What was pretty awesome, though, was that my tutor group (you may know that as a form room or homeroom or something like that) was in the Drama room. I was determined to make Drama my favourite subject since at that time I wanted to be an actress, so having my tutor group in Drama was just meant to be. When youre year nine, though, you have little seven week modules of all of the subjects (excluding the core ones like English, Maths, Science and Social Studies, which you had to take), so in the future youd know which ones youll be interested in taking. I didnt get to take Drama until the very end of the year, which was a bummer. And it was only seven weeks. I have taken Drama ever since, though, and it is my favourite subject. I did take Speech and Drama, though, which was an extra class kinda thing. I did a speech on classic movies (I was oh so predictable in those days) and a monologue as a mother who has just lost her son. I managed to get a Merit, which is the second highest grade. Back in those days, I used to be such a Drama freak.
  • Continuing on my quest to be an actress, I took part in the local production of Grease. Those were the best days of my life. Even though I was just part of the chorus, it was so fun to dress up and sing and dance and stuff. I did love being up on stage and stuff. Especially because it was one of the biggest hit shows that Dannevirke ever had.

    • This was the year when Leonardo DiCaprio became my favourite actor. And it was all thanks to Whats Eating Gilbert Grape, which I taped off the TV when it was playing in the middle of the night. A long time ago (2007, I believe), I saw the final 20 minutes of Titanic and proclaimed Leonardo DiCaprio to be my favourite actor. Because 20 minutes was all it took back in the day. However, once I saw his performance in Whats Eating Gilbert Grape, everything changed. Basically, youve just got to see the performance for yourself to understand how great it is. I didnt know that Leo was capable of such a performance...or looking like a 12 year old when he was really 19. I watched pretty much all of his films after that, and he actually did become my favourite actor. He probably still is. Even though hes chasing after dat Oscar.
    • I suppose 2009 wasnt a very good year because my parents split up. Which means that for the first time in my life, I got to move house. And then I moved house again later in the year. Alas, when my parents were in the process of splitting up, my favourite movie suddenly became Revolutionary Road. Sinister, huh? Seriously, that movie ripped me apart, especially with Leos face at the end. I then read the book, and wrote an essay on it for a school exam. You know, while everyone was writing normal essays on teenage-oriented books, I was obsessed with Revolutionary Road. I havent seen it since those dark days, though. I dont think I could really handle it.
    • The first house we moved in was just a very temporary house, which we got the rent on for quite cheap since the house was also for sale. I adored that house. It was way too big for my mum and I, but it was so nice. The only problem was that I wasnt allowed Blu-Tack on the walls, which meant that I couldnt have any posters. And I had really nice posters of Revolutionary Road and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button that I wanted to put up. We kinda just cheated and put them up anyway, but then we took them down whenever people came to look at the house. Im big on having my walls plastered with posters. As you will see later this week.
    • When I was playing netball, I sprained my ankle and tore some ligaments. I think what happened was that someone stopped me while I was trying to run, and my ankle twisted in this really weird way. It was agony. What made it worse was that I went for a hot shower, which you never do with such a fresh injury. I was lying on the couch, trying to convince myself that I didnt need to go to the hospital. My movie of choice for this occasion? Road to Perdition. I now only associate that movie with the agony I was in. I did end up going to the hospital though, and a whole year of physiotherapy and other treatments followed.
    • I did a REALLY big project on classic films. Most people did projects that only required them to do a poster, but no, not me. I did this huge 50 page report on everything from silent films right up to the 1950s. It was insane. I actually dont think Ive ever done anything as large as that since for school, which is sad because I did this in year nine, where you dont get anything for doing stuff.
    • As you well know, my horse Katie got given away in this year. The day after Michael Jackson died. And you know what? I would have been able to say goodbye to her had I not been watching Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid that afternoon. Not that I knew she was getting given away. Life, it is a funny old thing sometimes.
    • I started the blog on October 21st. This was after I saw Let the Right One In on the 18th, and I felt like I should write about that film. For a few weeks before then, I had tinkered around with writing reviews in this book which I called my "Movie Book", starting with reviews on W. and (500) Days of Summer. The truth is though, and most of you dont know this, is that I actually started the blog in January. I had written half a blog post on something - I do remember Angelina Jolie being a part of it - but had decided not to post anything. In October, though, I decided that watching three movies a week wasnt enough, so I wanted to watch a movie every day. Upon hearing about the plot of Julie & Julia, I thought I could blog about it. So I started this blog, even though I only had internet at my Dads and I was only allowed the computer for a certain amount of time. I think it is quite interesting how this blog came to be, when I feel like I was on a different planet in those times.
    • My favourite movie of that year became Michael Jacksons This Is It. For the life of me, I dont understand why this was now. The movie isnt all that special. I think it was just the fact that we ordered our tickets so far in advance, we had this big night out, and it felt kinda epic. For weeks all I could think about was the "Earth Song" sequence. And yeah, thats all I have to say about that.
    • The Hangover quickly outrun This Is It, though, and became my favourite film. No jokes, I actually claimed it was my favourite film for a long time. It was just so funny back in those days. And then I saw it 50 billion times.
    • I started writing for the paper on the 11th of December with a review of The Proposal. Those reviews were awful. But people seemed to like them, and I was so excited to see them every week. I really stuffed up that thing, but more on that in 2011.
    • That year closed out with movies like Inglourious Basterds and District 9. I loved those movies to death. I still do.
    • I also became an insomniac, which trickled over into the next year. At our new house (which is by a cemetery, too), people thought that the previous owners still lived here, so theyd come knocking on our windows at 1am. Being the paranoid person I am, I stayed up every night in fear that theyd come back. I could sleep at Dads house (luckily), but not at Mums. I tried everything from tiring myself out as much as I could during the day and drinking "sleepy tea" (man that stuff was disgusting). One thing that reminds me of those days is 3rd Rock from the Sun, since it was always on at 5am and Id be awake to see it. Good times.
Phew, that was long. Any movies that you loved back in the day but dont anymore? Why/how did you start blogging?

My Movie Biography Where Its At Now in 2012

My Movie Biography Where Its At Now in 2012

(2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011) Well, were heading into the home stretch now. Tomorrow is the big day. Just to let you know, you will probably have trouble visiting the site for a while. Dont worry, (fingers crossed) everything goes fine and Ill be back up and running this time tomorrow. Hope to see you there!  Anyway, 2012 in my movie biography...

    • By some small coincidence, all of the movies I got at one time from Fatso were by Roman Polanski. So I started off the year with Chinatown, Repulsion and Rosemarys Baby. That was...fun.
    • I saw The Muppets and The Adventures of Tintin on the same day. I felt so awkward being this 16 year old all alone in cinemas filled with children. Funnily enough, I preferred Tintin a lot more, but now The Muppets is pretty much my go-to movie when I want to feel better about life.
    • I finally got out of NZ! My father and I went to Melbourne, Australia for a week and that was exciting. I was pretty excited for the plane trip, because Drive was playing on the plane and I hadnt seen it because it was an R18. I did really like it when I saw it, but I completely forgot about the fact that it was censored, so I was left wondering what was so R18 about it. Then I looked it up on the internet and apparently there were 70 swearwords in it, but I hadnt heard any of them. When I got the film on DVD, I finally embraced it and it became my second favourite movie of 2011. While I was in Melbourne I bought a crapload of movies because they had everything that Id been looking for. And theres like, five JB Hi-Fis in the city, so I was in heaven. Also heavenly was the Pancake Parlour, but thats another story. I also went to the cinemas a fair bit because I wanted to escape the heat. I only really wanted to see The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, because I thought it was going to be an R18 in NZ and it was only an MA15+ in Australia. I was so excited to be all rebellious. Then I got back to NZ and I found out that it was only an R16. Which was somewhat disappointing. I also saw The Descendants and Hugo just because I could. I really miss Melbourne. It was such a nice place. One day I hope to go back.
    • While I wasnt as excited for the Oscars as much as I was last year (I blame the fact that I hadnt watched many of the movies), I still thought it was a good idea to wake up at 3am and watch the Oscar nominations for fun. It wasnt all that fun until I saw that Rooney Mara got nominated, in which case I let out this weird squeal that woke up everyone in the house. I stayed up until at least 4.30am ranting with people on Facebook about them. Which probably wasnt the best idea, because once the morning hit we were going to Palmerston North to watch War Horse. It didnt affect the experience. I still spent the entire film crying my eyes out. And when I say the "entire film", I mean the entire bloody thing. As soon as I saw that horse I was in tears.

    • The Oscars themselves were kinda exciting. Mainly because I made them more exciting than they were. I just jumped up and down all day, then I took peoples phones so I could search up photos of the dresses. When I saw Jessica Chastains, I almost cried. It was so beautiful. I spent my entire Bio period checking my phone to see who won stuff, which was pretty good because the teacher was always helping other people so I could sneak my phone out. I just about ran home to see the rest of the awards being handed out, which was pretty exciting. When Bret McKenzie won, I was doing little happy dances around my room. What can I say? The Oscars just get so much excitement out of me.
    • Another exciting part of this year was being told that I was going to direct the school production. I was so excited that I even laughed at something in I Dont Know How She Does It. Alas, that didnt turn out too well.
    • I made the mistake of watching Contagion while I was sick. Take it from me: it makes you feel ten times worse.
    • LOL, I saw I Melt with You. I just cant forget how jaw-droppingly bad this movie was, even while it wasnt bad in a bad movie kind of way. Christian McKay, I still love you.
    • June was my French New Wave month. That was kinda exhausting. But I did love the fact that I was introduced to films like The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Vivre Sa Vie and Breathless.
    • Hey, I did this speech. I was actually so stressed about it. Mainly because I didnt feel as ready as I usually do for it. And I was first up because the teacher "wanted to start off with some real quality". And it was like, 16 minutes long. But everyone loved it, which was something I really wasnt expecting. That day I also got to go and see Brave, which I cried a lot in. That was nice.
    • I won a LAMMY for Best Rating System and also got runner up for Best Blog. That was exciting. I found out literally minutes before I had to go for school, and I was so excited about it that I just ran to my friends house. Unfortunately it was raining and blowing a gale outside, and I forgot to put my phone in my pocket. Later that day, my phone stopped working. I blame all of you who voted for me. Jokes, that was a very exciting day.
    • I saw Shame!!!!!!!!!!!! I loved that movie so much. At the end I sat on the couch like kinda crying, kinda howling. It was a bizarre noise I was making. My pets were very worried. Ironically, that night I had watched Jack and Jill, which became my least favourite film of 2011. Shame was my favourite.
    • We Need to Talk About Kevin became the scariest film ever when that earthquake hit. Since then I havent dared to turn the lights out when Im watching a movie. I still cant believe that there was another earthquake the second time I watched it. For a long time after it I was in denial over the fact that I found Ezra Miller VERY attractive in that movie. After a while I was just like "stuff it". Now Ezra and I are going to get married. LOL.
    • July happened. BEST MOVIE MONTH EVER. Especially when there were so many releases one week that I had to take six movies home at once to watch them all. They were 50/50, Like Crazy, The Skin I Live In, J. Edgar, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close and John Carter. The quality of those movies was insane. Ive never seen a week like that before in my life.
    • The Dark Knight Rises happened. I was so excited that Id just be doing something random like selling someone a Lotto ticket, and then Id have this mini excitement surge go up my spine because I knew I was getting closer to seeing it. Im in the minority who absolutely loved it. Seeing it was so magical. At the beginning of the film, I would casually just squeeze my friends hand when someone exciting came on, like Bane or Batman. But then after the first thirty minutes, my hand didnt leave his hand because things were getting too intense. When he checked the time, I saw that we only had an hour of the film left and I started getting so sad - I didnt want it to end. Then once the end hit, I was crying like a baby. It was so beautiful.
The next day, though, something strange happened. I felt so empty and sad, and I didnt know whether this was because I felt sad because the excitement was over or because I thought I was disappointed by the film (I wasnt). I couldnt shake that strange feeling. Then, that night, as I was watching Spirited Away, I found out about the Aurora cinema shootings. This shocked me to the absolute core. I just couldnt process any of what was going on. It just felt very close to home because it happened in a place which I love so much, and during a movie which I love so much. I know it didnt really "affect" me, but for weeks after that, I was haunted by the face of the shooter and of the thoughts that it could happen here. It was just such a depressing time.
    • My birthday happened. That was exciting. The weekend after my birthday I thought it was all over, but I arrived home from work and my friends were there to give me my first surprise birthday party. That was cool. They made me a Captain America cake to go with the Batman cake I got a few days before. It was really nice.
    • Little Shop of Horrors happened in September so I didnt get to do a lot of anything. But Im still extremely proud of that production, even though I didnt really feel like a big part of it.
    • One of the best things about this year was that I met Lena, our German exchange student. She flew out of NZ today which makes me extremely sad. She is just the coolest, happiest person ever. I felt really bad though because we had this beach gathering for her which was overnight. That weekend I got really sick with influenza and all I wanted to do was go home because I was pretty much dying. Still, I managed to keep the illness at bay and proceeded onto being the funniest person I know for the large majority of the trip. It wasnt so nice that I got absolutely no sleep because I couldnt breathe and I looked like a train had hit me. But yes, I do miss you Lena, and hopefully you still read my blog while youre in Germany!
    • Watching Prometheus this week with my friends was the funniest thing ever. Before I begin, I must say that I really liked the movie. But it seemed to run along on people being really stupid. Seriously. We were yelling at the screen most of the time. Especially at David, because he just had to touch EVERYTHING, which would ruin EVERYTHING. Had we watched that film in cinemas, we would have been those annoying people that everyone complains about.
    • I have 12 days left of year 12. Next year is my last year of school. Im terrified of that fact.
    • I guess I should end this with what Im doing right now: I dont think Ill be watching a movie tonight because I have so much planned for tomorrow that I should get an early start. My foot is really hurting but I have no idea why. Today is the two year anniversary of The Last Station being on the new release wall, which makes me laugh because it isnt exactly a new release anymore. And yeah.
Thanks for reading this long series! Hope to see you all back tomorrow. Meanwhile, how has 2012 been for you? What movie has been the highlight of your year?

My Movie Biography The Dark Knight Changed Everything in 2008

My Movie Biography The Dark Knight Changed Everything in 2008

(2006, 2007) I also get really sad and nostalgic when I think about 2008. This was my last year of primary school, so naturally, it was nice to be the "big fish" at school. And it was just a really nice year. Well, most of the time. I actually started growing up this year...even though I went through 2006 and 2007 thinking "YES. I AM AS MATURE AS ILL EVER BE." Lol. I may as well put this in bullet-points because theres just so much to recall...

    • The year started out really bad. Heath Ledger passed away. This was one of those moments where I remember exactly where I was when I found out. I was sitting at the computer at lunchtime listening to the midday news. They said something about how news was just breaking about the passing of "young actor Heath Ledger". It didnt really register in my head, because I thought he was just mixing up Heath Ledgers name with some other news story. I searched it up on the internet, and there it was. I was so distraught - it was probably one of the first deaths of a famous person that truly shocked me right through to the core. To this day it hasnt really sunk in that hes gone, but the world lost a truly gifted actor that day.
    • Those holidays I saw some really cool movies that stick with me right up to this day. Waitress was one of them - I have a thing of watching that film when Im sick. Which wasnt a good idea because Id always get so hungry from it. Those pies looked so good. Enchanted was another one, which introduced me to Amy Adams and boosted my love for James Marsden.

    • Oh yeah, the "love of my life" in 2008 was James Marsden. I look back and go "yes, I made the right choice there". Seriously, how could you not love this guy? Hes so charming in both Hairspray and Enchanted. And a little stupid, but hey, that was really cute. I did get a movie called Heights out (this was back when Blockbuster had like, every movie), and I was totally shocked that it turned out that his character was gay at the end. I mean, I had Brokeback Mountain, and now this? Haha.
    • My Hairspray obsession was still going in this year. Going strong, I should add. When youre year eight, you get the opportunity to be a school leader. Now, I really wanted to be head girl. Really. So I thought it would be a good idea to put in my speech that I wanted to make our school production Hairspray. The teachers actually laughed at me. Jeez. I mean, it wouldnt have been feasible with such a small school, but anyway. I didnt end up getting head girl...I got to be a freaking sports leader. Me. I guess, back then, I was in the top netball team and I was the fastest girl in the school when it came to 100m sprints. But still, if you saw me back then I didnt exactly scream "sports leader".
    • The reason why 2008 was so great was because I had a teacher who actually encouraged my movie watching. Now, my teachers used to discourage everything I liked. Yeah, I know I was far too obsessed with horses. But they literally told me off every time I did something vaguely connected to horses, so I had to pretend that I liked cats. This teacher encouraged me to make posters with my (extremely bad) film reviews on them. She asked me about the films I was watching. She particularly encouraged me to look at classic films, which I did.
    • One thing that helped my love for classic films was a book I bought the day I saw 27 Dresses (I was in love with James Marsden so dont judge) called "501 Movie Stars". It is basically a catalogue on all the greatest movie stars ever, which is sorted out in chronological order according to the stars birthdate. Lemme tell ya, I never went past the 1930s. I was obsessed with all of the stars from before then. They had these little quotes in them, which I turned into this whole essay about how it sucked to be in Hollywood at the time. That essay seemed a little sinister, since it was all about how they died...probably not the best material to put up on a classroom wall, but it went up there anyway.
    • I saw Gone with the Wind in 2008! I remember it very well. As most of the classic films werent at Blockbuster, I had to buy them. After a parent/teacher interview, I conned my mother into buying me Gone with the Wind because I was so good. I sat down to watch it on Good Friday. I literally had no idea that it was four hours long. Or that the disc was double sided, not just really cheap looking. Good thing I got the right side, huh? I thought it was just ending really abruptly, and it took me five minutes to register that I had to flip over the disc. It was a life-changing moment to see that double sided DVDs existed in our world. Still, I completely loved the film. Because of this love, one of my friends watched it, but he watched it the wrong way around, haha. Us Dannevirke people...double sided DVDs are so out of this world to us.
    • Cue the love for Vivien Leigh.
    • I was obsessed with Mamma Mia! for a while. Dont judge. I used to sing along to the soundtrack a lot. I actually still do.
    • On a totally un-related note, my horse Katie won two races that year. Those were the happiest days of my life.
    • Possibly the most life-changing thing of 2008 (and there were a lot) was when I went and saw The Dark Knight. I didnt realise it then, but I realise it now. I had seen the trailer before Get Smart, read many articles about it through Empire magazine, knew that Heath Ledger was in it - but I didnt bother to see Batman Begins. Not until June 2010, in fact. My friend and I decided that we REALLY wanted to go and see it. The only free nights were either the night where we were being shown around the high school, or the night after, which conveniently had a storm that made it quite dangerous to go over to Palmerston North. We went for the latter. My mother told me that I wasnt allowed to go, and I was really upset about it. REALLY upset. Eventually she caved and The Dark Knight was a go. That day we told our teachers how excited we were, and they just replied "oh, I hear that movie is REALLY violent and not suitable for kids." LOL. It was blowing a gale and pouring down with rain, but we made it over there.
I sat down in that cinema with no idea of what to expect. I thought superhero movies were all cheesy. The Dark Knight was the complete opposite. Now, I admit that I didnt fully understand this film in that viewing. I was too wound up in Heath Ledgers performance. I had never seen anything like it. It was the first movie Id seen that really filled up a cinema - by that I mean that the chairs were vibrating from how loud the sound was. I was so invested in this movie, too - it was the first time Id experienced losing myself in a movie. The way it ended had a particular effect on me, too. At age 12, Id been inadvertently introduced to the man who would become my favourite director. And I truly mean it when I say that (this aint no Tarantino situation). The only bad thing about that situation was that I needed to go to the toilet for the entire time. And The Dark Knight is not a short movie by any means. I think I just about threw up afterwards. Gee, thanks, Nolan.
    • Not a lot happened for the rest of that year, apart from my love for Vivien Leigh. Which led to a 100 page biography/project on her. The biography was a smaller, concise version of one of the biographies of hers that I read. One day I might share it with you, if I can find all of it. It is actually quite good, if I do say so myself.
    • Other than that, not a lot happened for the rest of 2008. I was basically just getting ready to leave primary, which I was terrified of doing. It seems so stupid now, because high school is ten times better than primary. I should be more terrified of going to university. Those last days went really fast. We tried to make our whole class watched The Dark Knight, but only a select few of us kept watching it. I made an end of year speech which everyone seemed to like. I didnt get dux (top of the class), which is one of the biggest disappointments of my life (haha, what a sad life I lead). I ended the school year with Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day, which ironically is about two women who get rid of the old and embrace the new. It was such an appropriate movie for the time. Geez, that dounded really cheesy but...it wasnt planned.
    • The one thing I miss the most from 2008, though, is the fact that Blockbuster had so many movies. I used to go there after school lots and raid the drama section, because thats where all the classic movies were. We used to have Memento and Requiem for a Dream and movies like that. That year they started to clean out the store, and all of those movies disappeared. I would give anything to go back to that. Anything in this world.
Yeah...2008 gets me really nostalgic sometimes. Such a great year. What is a film experience that changed your life?
