More Fun And Easy Collage Paper Techniques

More Fun And Easy Collage Paper Techniques

Sometimes you just need something fun and easy to do in the studio that cheers you up and feels productive.  Making Pretty Papers is just the thing for a chilly November day.
WARM Collage papers for an uncertain future from Jane Davies on Vimeo.

Here are some links to the materials I am using, though there are more links on my Favorite Materials page.

Novacolor Paints - these are decent quality paints: good pigments in a good binder, but they are more extended (i.e. less pigment per unit of volume) than professional grade paints.  You can only get them from the manufacturer; they are not available from retailers.

ArtQuest Perfect Pigments, made in Michigan, are relatively new to me.  Gorgeous colors!

Golden Fluid Acrylics: many of you are familiar with these luscious paints.  I use them for most of my smaller work, and the Heavy Body paints for larger works.  I use some of the HB paints in this video too.

Golden High Flow Acrylics: these are low-viscosity (think: watery) paints suitable for dripping, dropping, splashing, flinging, hurling, spattering, and the like.  They have the same pigment load as other Golden paints, so they are not simply Fluid Acrylics watered down.

Stay Warm, but have a chill weekend.  We all need it after last week!

More Rug Painting Fun

More Rug Painting Fun

Well, Im going crazy. I painted two different rugs this weekend. In addition to the one I painted last week.

I bought this ugly but promising rug at a thrift store for $8 last week.
 photo 62F246C4-CE95-4C1C-95CD-F3D412819646_zpspfdsebqp.jpg

I gave it a nice lint rolling to clean it up, first.

 photo BB19ED74-2BCD-44AE-924C-9A6A9AB8520C_zpsj5jijld1.jpg

I found a rug on ebay that I used as my inspiration for colors. I broke out the Frogtape, and went to work. I hadnt used Frogtape until last week, and wow. That stuff works great. You dont even have to do the paint over trick with it! I am a convert.

 photo 996D29C6-48AD-4989-80E3-89F18DEAEBD4_zpshkxm0dax.jpg

Anyway, I bought the extra thick 2" version, and made little triangles. This is how I cut them:

 photo C2A5FA76-F8E0-40F6-812A-4BFD2409157F_zpsvsqidlad.jpg

I would tape the end to the counter top, then cut like five diamonds, then tape on.

 photo B68D782A-050B-4BF5-A04C-145674B66008_zpsa7h2kvvt.jpg

I found the center, then started taping from there. NOTE: I didnt do it perfectly, since it was the weekend, and this is a tester project for my own home. If it were for a client, all the little diamonds would be the same size, in a straight line, etc. I already have an eye twitch from so much work and stress lately, so I am not trying to add to that on my weekend time by driving myself crazy ;)

 photo FFD91A82-F0D8-42A5-A24C-CFE04A6B886A_zpsebcgbyth.jpg
after it was all taped. There was only one point where I got confused, which was trying to match that funky triangular pattern on either side. My brain started hurting but i figured it out.

and painted:

I used regular house and craft paint that I already had. I think that eggshell works best, because its not shiny and it is fairly pliable when it dries. Either way, this is not like, a fancy long term rug solution (like the dye). I have done this before. Its like one of those rugs you buy from urban outfitters, thats printed? Maybe a little better with holding up, but you know what I mean! Its fun for a short term, trendy solution if you dont wanna spend $$$ on a rug.

heres where I was starting to get excited!

and here is where I have to leave you, because I have to go to work!

More Earth Day Fun

More Earth Day Fun

Here are some ideas from Jen on how to celebrate Earth Day with your kids.

Jen found this cute inflatable Globe to hang from the ceiling.  She got everyone a new REUSABLE water bottle to drink from, and an EARTH bouncy ball.  The centerpiece was a map she got in her junk mail and REUSED as a decoration.  That is an idea I will have to try!

Then they made Earth Day cookies.  So easy and cute!

Check out my other Earth Day post here for more fun ideas!

More Science Camp Fun and Another Freebie

More Science Camp Fun and Another Freebie

As promised, heres another activity I taught during science camp. First, I read the students the book, Where Does the Garbage Go.I love using the Lets-Read-And-Find-Out-Science books. Then we made an edible landfill. I asked many questions along the way. The kids were really surprised to find out how many layers of protection were put down before trash was ever added to the landfill. The only thing I might try to replace is the Fruit Roll-up. It really doesnt go with vanilla pudding. I was thinking of having the kids roll out a piece of caramel. Click {HERE} for a copy of the directions.
Enjoy!

More Fun With Magnets

More Fun With Magnets

Both of my daughters (almost 5 yrs and almost 3 yrs) really enjoyed this magnetic activity and it was so simple to put together. Here is what you need: towel, jar or bottle filled with water, magnet, paper clips and a small bowl.

Demonstrate by holding the magnet flat against the glass (and pointing out that it needs to be held flat), visually find a paper clip at the bottom that you will try to "catch". Starting at the bottom, slide the magnet up the glass. The paper clip slides up too.

Once it reaches the top, very carefully, take it out using fingers and place it in the bowl. (My youngest gets so happy and excited about this part!)

Continue until all the paper clips are out.

And then start again!

My Fun Girls Weekend Recap!

My Fun Girls Weekend Recap!

It has been a really fun, nonstop weekend! I have talked about how busy work has been and the long hours I have been working, and the weekend was just the same, ha! There is no rest for the wicked... except for this upcoming one! I cant wait.

My mom and sister-in-law arrived at my apartment around 3:30 PM on Friday. I was still working and then hit the gym for leg day! Fridays are my hard leg workouts so I couldnt miss it. I pushed hard and it felt great.

After the gym I met my crazy girls at home so I could get ready. We then went to one of my favorite restaurants "Cantina 1511". Mama and Amber love Mexican food, so I wanted to show them my favorite spot that is authentic and fresh. We enjoyed our dinner and cocktails on the patio while a man sang and played the acoustic guitar. You cant beat that! I ordered my strawberry and mint Mojito, mom had Sangria, and Amber had a passion fruit Margarita. Mom of course had to get a shot of Fireball whiskey. I have created a monster, yall. Homegirl loves her whiskey now. After dinner, we went to see "22 Jumpstreet". That movie was absolutely hilarious. I have not laughed that hard in a long time. It is a must see!

Saturday morning we slept in then spent the day shopping. Mama and Amber wanted to get some sexy new clothes for an evening out. With Mama being single and ready to mingle, we have to keep her looking good. We went a ton of places and had a lot of fun. I scored a cute new pair of heels, a strapless dress, and SMORES FLAVORED protein powder! Yum!

When we got back to the apartment after shopping, Amber and I were going to lay out by the pool for a while. However, it started to storm (of course). So she and my mom made a pizza and I took off to the gym! I did 45 minutes of cardio -- 25 on the StairMill and 20 on the Elliptical. I was so proud that I went - especially since it was a rest day. I did not want to be around pizza!

We then took showers and got glam for another evening out. I wore my new sexy Corset top from Venus and I was ready to be a man-eater, ha! Kidding. I got cute pictures of mom and Amber, but they were not reciprocating. The pictures they took were hilarious. We could not get it right.

Once we were ready, we went and ate Asian for dinner then took off to a local bar, "Bradshaws Social House" for drinks and to mingle. I sipped on the best drink. I LOVED IT! It was Skinny girl cucumber vodka, club soda water, and fresh cucumbers. That may sound weird to some, but it was so light and refreshing. If and when I drink this summer, that will be my go-to drink. I HATE drinks that are made with syrup that is loaded with sugar, so this is a great alternative without a ton of calories and sugar. My mantra is all about balance. I say go out and enjoy yourself, but keep it as healthy and you can. Those little victories completely add up.

This morning mama and Amber left around 11. As soon as they walked out of the door, I got right to work. It was such  a productive day! I did 3 loads of laundry - including all of my sheets and bedding. I then went to Target and Earthfare for this weeks groceries.

When I arrived back home, before I got to cleaning and food prep I tried out a new recipe. Last night, my best friend Anna asked me to try and create a cleaner version of "Cake Batter Pancakes". I loved the idea so last night at 2 AM when I was in bed, I was putting a list together of ingredients, comparing calories, and just being the little food scientist I am sometimes, ha! I think I developed it so I went and got the ingredients  today while doing my regular shopping. Ladies and gentlemen, I think we have a winner! I will be sharing the recipe Thursday.

Once my trial of cake batter pancakes were finished, I got knee deep into cleaning and food prep. Unfortunately I will have to go out and buy more chicken tomorrow, I did not realize how little I had left (oops!). I then got in a 40 minute plyometric full body workout -- my hot mess express!

Now I am off to soak in a bubble bath then cuddle on the couch to watch the rest of the last season of "True Blood" and then the new season starts 9! I am SO freaking excited but also really, really sad. True Blood is my absolute favorite show of all time. I have read and own all of the Sookie Stackhouse books AND all seasons of "True Blood". That show is literally my favorite of all time. I feel such a connection to Sookie and people tell me all of the time I look like her - I even have the gap in my teeth like she does. It breaks my heart to see this ending. Oh well, at least I will always have the books to read and seasons to watch.

I hope everyone has a fantastic week. I am ready to kick it in high gear, burn some fat, and work over this plateau. I was able to play a lot and let loose this weekend so now its time be focused!

Try Quest Protein Bars!

More Fun with Children of the 90s Search Terms

More Fun with Children of the 90s Search Terms

There have been so many hilarious search terms popping up in my Google Analytics tracking data, I felt it was only fair to spread the funny around and share them with you. After all, havent you ever wondered what make other readers and/or random internet lurkers like yourself curious about the 90s? Whats that? No? Youd rather just reminisce about the 90s? Just kidding, of course you do. Due to popular demand, were having another brief interlude to examine just how confused some of us 90s fanatics really are.

In the case of many of these terms, it seems the asker is simply misguided or possibly suffers from incredibly vague childhood memories. Others, though, are far more troubling. For one, it makes me want to build a makeshift time machine with suicide doors, gun it to 88, and knock out the guy who came up with the bright idea of teaching Whole Language in lieu of grammar in elementary schools. Clearly, many of us are still suffering from the unfortunate ramifications; if the frightening structure of some of these searches are indicative of our grammatical prowess, Im about to invest in widespread remedial training.

Granted, we all behave differently when we think no one is looking. We act differently in the comfort of our own homes than we do in the presence of others. After all, wed be far less likely to blast the Tom Jones and break out the Carlton dance if company was present. Google has granted us with a precious gift of insight into these innermost thoughts of our fellow 90s fans, and just what kind of nostalgiaheads would we be if we didnt accept and delight in that gift?

I appeal to you, fellow 90s fans, for help in decoding these Google quests. Between the lot of us, weve got to be able to provide these poor lost souls with some answers. If we cant come up with anything, well, then theres always mocking.

19 ninetys nickelodeon game show
I just really like this interpretive spelling; I propose we issue extra credit for number breakdown creativity.

90s cartoon that has a strong man that when changes back to a kid, green goo release
Ill need your help with this one, Im drawing a blank. Admittedly the description is lacking in...everything. Mostly proper tenses and pronouns.

3 boys, brothers. blonde hair, young musicians from the 90s, who were they
First of all, they were Hanson. Second of all, I feel like youre giving progressive clues on a game show. What do I win?

1993 music video with kids wearing bee

Really? Just wearing a bee? Thats it?

90s hair styles what were we thinking
Good question. Unfortunately, my crystal ball is in the shop, so Im unable to ascertain the specific collective spirit of our innermost thoughts and feelings. Im guessing you could probably search deep within yourself and find the reasoning, if you just believe.

are you afraid of the dark janitor
Maybe its just the political correctness in me, but Im reading this as racist. For shame, anonymous googler.

children running away from foster care movies in 90s
What do you think, were there really that many of these in the decade? Enough to warrant their own genre? It seems a bit suspect. Unless maybe they mean children who ran away from movies about foster care. In that case, this might be very serious.

fruit snack in the 90s that are made of noodles like a fruit
Theyre probably talking about String Thing here, but theres something to be said for the creative license in that description. Made of noodles like a fruit? Not noodle-like fruit, that might make some semblance of sense, but just noodles like an actual fruit. The comparison is baffling.

describe the types of lifestyle children live in the 9o’s and in the currant year that promoted fatness
We could probably start with the currant, the fruit is very sugary. Other than that, weve got an "o" instead of a zero in 90s, some very confused grammar, and the word "fatness." That word is pretty awesome.

compilations of awesomeness 90s
Look no further--youre already here!

edward scissorhands is so sad
Good point. No, really, I appreciate you sharing. Im glad we had this talk.

oh we have that baby-sitter died
I dont even know where to start with this one. What? I guess it could be some very confused variation of Dont Tell Mom the Babysitters Dead, but its really all over the place.

kid show that has talking plains on nickelodeon
Oh, I always preferred the ones with the talking mesas. As far as slope landforms go, theyre pretty much tops. You know, elevation-wise. At least compared to the plains. I think Id better stop while Im behind on this one.

90s song can i get your number the one with the seven digits
I know the song youre referring to, but I cant help but love this misheard interpretation of it. Oh, that one. I was going to give you one with the area code included and/or my European access code, but then I was like, hey, just the seven. Got it.

dont you hate it when your eating a dunkaroo and the biscuit breaks in the
In the what? The what? The suspense is killing me now. And for the record, I totally do.

how many kids in the 90s didnt have a dad
Um, total? Worldwide? Fictional? Youve really got to be a little more specific. Id like to help, but youre throwing a two centimeter lure into a 343,423,668,428,484,681,262 gallon ocean. Yes, I just had to google "gallons in the ocean," so someone will probably be making fun of me on their Google Analytics search term round-up sometime soon.

90s cartoon which superhero usually says lets get dangerous
I just like the phrasing on this one...usually. Did Darkwing Duck occasionally forget his lines or have flash of creative discretion? Maybe sometimes he just didnt feel like it.

Thats not even the worst of it, but I used my discretion in censoring the really obscene and/or absolutely non-native English speaker-generated content. If any of you know these answers, please, throw these poor souls a line. Its the least we can do. Well, actually, we could probably not do anything, so its the second least we can do. Regardless, they truly need your help.

More Fun with Stars and Stripes!

More Fun with Stars and Stripes!

Stars and Stripes Paper Crafts
These are some paper crafts my kiddos and I made last year. I think we got our ideas from MarthaStewart.com...they are simple enough for kids to really help. We had lots of fun making them and they made our patio so festive!

The Paper Lantern: this is just like the Halloween ones that we all made in elementary school!

The Stars:  Just cut three stars out of three different papers, stack and staple in the middle, then fold the top and bottom ones so they show the one beneath.

The Firework:  Just cut a 8x2 paper stip into fringe.  Then roll and tape onto a skewer stick.  These were fun to set al  around in different colors and heights on the food table! (place in the decorative cans or poke into salads, watermelon, etc)

Here is a super fun party favor.  We made one for each family to say thanks for coming!  We used red paper and blue duct tape.  The toothpick top we got from Michaels.
